HEPBURN COMING AGAIN

Latest Film Also Set in

.!

Early 1 1800s

‘Picture Booked at Circle. Second Barrie Play Starring Actress.

Katharine Hepburn just can’t seem to get out of the early 19th Century. The last time Indianapolis saw her was on English’s stage as Charlotte Bronte’s

Jane Eyre. The next ‘time we see her, which will be Friday at the Circle, she will be Phoebe Throstle, heroine of James M. Barrie's “Quality Street.” ] In this film she again plays a young English lady of the early 1800s. In fact, Miss Hepburn hasn't | moved across the screen in strict- | ly up-to-date frocks since ‘Alice | Adams,” which appeared two years | ago. , This | is the second Barrie play | that the auburn-haired actress has | done in pictures. The first, [of] course, was “The Little Minister.’ Both, |incidentally, were among | Maude | Adams’ most popular ve- | hicles, [and Miss Hepburn naturally | wanted! to do the second one as; well. - Therefore, she did it.

{ It’s an Old Custom

La Hi pburn has a way of getting | stories that she wants. She hand- | picked | ‘her third screen play and | her second’ starring one, and insisted that it should be done ‘i spite of much well-meaning advice. That, |you. will remember, was! “Morning Glory.” { Now [she wants to do! the sane play on the stage. Doubtless that | also will come to pass. Costarring in “Quality Street” is Franchot Tone, making his first] appearance opposite Miss Hep- | burn. Come to think of if, all Miss | Hepburn’s leading men have done | the same thing. She never has had the same “hero” for two pictures. |

Mr. Tone No. 12.

Mr. Tone rounds out the dozen | male stars that have been seen with the vivacious young lady from Hartford, Conn. Others were John | Barrymore, Colin Clive, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Paul Lukis, Ralph | Bellamy, John Beal, Charles Boyer, | Fred MacMurray, Brian Aherne,! Fredric March and Herbert Marshall.

Mr. Tone hasn't done so. badly himself. In four years. of picture making he has appeared with 14 of | Hollywood's ultra- -glamorous. And | in two films, “Mutiny on the Boun- | ty” and “Lives of a Benga! Lancer!” there weren't any “heroines” Unlike Miss Hepburn, Mr. Tone | has played several return engagements. With his spouse, Joan Crawferd. he has been seen a half-dozen | times. Jean Harlow has been the costar on four occasions, Karen | Morley, twice, and Loretta Young | twice. The rest were for one" engagement only. Boasts 26 Pictures

~ Altogether, Mr. Tone has been in 26 pictures; a little work in short division will show that's an average | of more than six pictures a year, and may lead you to the conclusion | that picture-acting is nice work if | you can get it. In the coming attraction, Mr. Tone loses an endurance contest in- | volving the tender passion. As: a! dashing young doctor, he leaves Miss Hepburn, his beloved, for a 10-year | stretch in the Napoleonic wars. | Miss Hepburn keeps the flame of | love burning brightly . during the | hectic decade, but alas, Mr. Tone forgets. He finds his devoted Phoebe 4 rather prim-looking school teacher when he returns. So she masquer- | ades as her own niece to prove that, she still is youthful, and for chance to jilt him. That's all you need to know until | the picture arrives—except that the | supporting cast includes Fay Bainter, ‘Eric Blore, Cora Witherspoon, Joan Pornidine 10 An Florente Lake.
