Joe Recalls Tris’ Friend, Ray Chapman | Latter Was Killed by nn

Ball Thrown by Yankee Pitcher, Mays. By United Press

CLEVELAND, April 14.—Tris Speaker, baseball hero, seriously

injured Sunday in a fall from the -

second-story porch of his hjme, was reported today to be “quile a bit better.”

By JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer NEW YORK, April 14—The great Tris Speaker lies on a cot with a fractured skull hovering between life and death in a Cleveland hospital. The greatest pal Speaker had in baseball was Ray Chapman; he died from a fractured skull—and Speaker saw him die. The graceful ball piayer—the man who revolutionized center field . play—must be in extreme agony now, but it can scarcely be greater than the mental torture he suffered as he stood at the bedside and watched his pal breathe his last, They were both on the Cleveland ball club at the time. Speaker was the manager and center. fielder. Chapman was the shortstop, a gay, spirited fellow off the field, a brilliant, effective worker in uniform. Chapman was hit in the head with a pitched ball thrown by Carl Mays of the Yankees at the Polo Grounds and died from the efiects some hours later. | Mays was an underhand pitcher, notorious for his addiction to the bean ball. Like many other pitchers of that era Mays would deliberately throw a ball at a batter's head to get him away irom the plate. Chapman was a crowder. He would lean over the plate, obscure the pitcher’s target, then pull back as the ball was thrown. This made him a difficult man to pitch to. He was always getting the pitcher in a hole, and drawing what the ball players call the fat ball to hit.

Not Fast Enough

This time he didn’t draw back fast enough and was hit. The impact was violent. Many peoplé thought at first Chapman had | hit the ball. It bounded of Chapman skull and rolled out on the field [between first and the pitcher's box. Mays must have thought the ball had been hit, too. He picked it up and fielded it to Wally Pipp at first base. Chapman didn’t collapse imme-

Williams

diately. His vitality must have been |

enormous. Dazed, he walked around the catcher, then cut back to the . infield, got "as far as second base and fell over in a heap unconscious. They took him to an uptown hospital and Speaker rode with him. Of course there never was any way to know what was in Mays’ mind when he let the fatal pitch go. He was a notorious bean baller, but, as I have said, Chapman was the type of batsman who invited the bean ball. By crowding the plate as he did he gave the pitcher little to shoot at. Mays’ conscience certainly never troubled him. The next time out he blanked Detroit with three hits.

the town has known in the history of modern baseball. A glittering performer manually, Speaker was possessed of a driving personality that seemed somehow to bring mediocre ball players up to his own level. This was the secret of his success Speaker must have been the greatest center fielder of all time. ou never hear a dissentin® vote hen the subject is brought up.

2 Even the old-timers give him ‘his,

and the moderns couldn't possibly ‘have any other choice. Every time anybody attempts to name the greatest outfield of all time Speaker’'s name is invariably on the list. At his peak he had a great pair of legs and was as fast as a dash man. He always played compara- ‘ tively close in for a center fielder. That's how he was able to make those occasional dvbuble plays at second base. He had no patience with outfielders who played with their backs to the wall. Speaker was more than just a gifted center fielder. He ‘was a fine hitter, a splendid base runner and he threw strikes from the outfield. He was an adventurous man off the field, a big game hunter, a daring horseman and a top flight cowboy. I once saw him bulldog a steer in close to record time down ih Texas. The newspapers say he fell from a second-story porch setting out - some flowers. An ironical crackup for a man who has led such a full life—but more grimly ironical is the fractured skull and the tragic flash back to his great pal, Chapman.

LET’S GO FISHING

By G. H. D.

WAS standing in front of a sporting goods store window a couple of weeks ago,” writes Joe, “when suddenly I went into a sort of trance and when I recovered about two hours later I found I had bought a complete fly-fishing outfit. I'm still not quite sure what happened but I am trying to make the most of it. “I guess I was lucky in my selection because I have been practicing on the lawn and in the creek and I find I can get the line out about 30 feet with some accuracy. All my previous fishing has been in lakes and gravel pits; some casting but mostly still fishing. Now I want to try stream fishing and all I have is the outfit and the desire. How do I start?” JIE This is a tough one. It’s like being asked how to be a dentist or an astronomer or how to go about getting married. For a nickel we would duck it. But here goes. If we were taking a fly-fisherman on his first trip we first would make sure he could handle 20 or 30 feet of line without hooking himself in the back of the neck every time. We would help him select several streamer flies and bucktails in the standard colors and sizes.

# "” 2 7 un =

E would wait, at this time of year, for several warm and sunny days. We would pick water the size of Fall Creek or maybe smaller, for bass have been traveling upstream and this is the time to find them in pools that will be nearly dry in a couple of months. We would find a pool below a riffle where there was plenty of room for his amateur backcasts. We would supervise the selection of the leader and fly. The leader should be at least three feet long, of about five to 10-pcund test. If the water is clear and the sun bright we might recommend a six-foot leader. Later, when the water is low and very clear, a nine-foot leader will not hurt and it might even be tapered to fina at the tip. But we won't worry about that now. For some reason our favorite bass fly is yellow or yellow and black—a hair or feather arrangement tied on a medium long shank hook, size four or six. ; Spinner? Sure, why not, particularly if the water is cloudy or milky. The spinner size is a fine source of argument. We prefer the smallest that will spin. If may be as tiny as a grain of corn. ” a ” ! n on "

HE larger the spinner the greater the strain on the rod and for a beginner who hasn’t developed the technique of lifting the lure to the surface before the sharp retrieve, a small spinner is best. But in the smallest sizes a spinner sometimes will not, spin freely. There's only one way to find out; try it. We forgot to mention that the approach to the creek should be as guarded as is possible.| There's no sense crawling on your hands and knees, but on the other hand the angler who stomps out on the bank, kicking clods or pebbles into the water and allowing his shadow to fall across the pool, is just plain silly. Joe, this is a dirty trick. Here we have got yeu right up to the place where you are ready to make the first cast and we run out of space., Watch tomorrow for the next thrilling installment of “Joe, the Fly-Fisherman” or “Who Started This?”
