AT BOYS’ HOME
Patricide, 15, Grateful to Priest for Chance to Start Anew.
By United Press OMAHA, Neb, April 8.—Billy Meagher, 15-year-old Denver, Colo., patricide, breathed a sigh of relief upon reaching Father Flanagan's Home for Boys today. : “A week ago I thought everything was ‘washed up’ for me,” said Billy, who has been paroled to the Rev. Fr. E. J. Flanagan, founder of the home, “but Father Flanagan has opened up a new world for me.” . Billy, who admitted . killing 'his father because he was “not doing the right thing by mamma,” smiled broadly as he was welcomed by the other 300 boys at the institution, located at Boystown, Neb. At the home he will resume his high school studies. A freshman, he hoped to make up the two months he lost while in a Denver jail await ing trial. Father Flanagan expressed thankfulness to Denver authorities for turning the boy over to him. “I am very grateful for this opportunity of preventing a crime far greater than that committed by “Billy Meagher,” the priest said. “Had Billy been sent to the penitentiary, then society would be guilty of the gravest criminal injustice.
Crime of Ignorance
“Billy is a normal, healthy boy. The terrible tragedy in which he was involved was the result of his home environment. It was this circumstance, entirely beyond his control, that pulled the trigger of the gun that killed his father. “Billy is no criminal. You have to talk to him only for five minutes to sense the fine, lovable qualities of “the boy. His was a crime of innecerice and ignorance. “If I were to be taken away tomorrow, I would consider my life's work complete for having saved him the stark and inevitable ruin that was hanging over his life.”

Kansas City Housewife Glad She Horsewhipped McElroy
By United Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 8.—Mrs. Mary Wyatt resumed her housework today, satisfied that she had struck a blow for all the wives of Kansas City firemen by horsewhipping City Manager H. F. McElroy. “I am a decent citizen and it was not my fault I was driven to it,”
she said. conditions among firemen’s fami-® lies.” Mrs. Wyatt blames crooked politicians for a 50 per cent cut in firemen’s salaries, reducing them to about $60 a month. She hates politicians with all the energy of her 145 pounds, which are packed in her 4-foot 11-inch stature. “It's funny that they aren't satisfied with the take from their slot machines, gambling houses and bookie joints, and all the night clubs they are mixed up in, but they have to squeeze the poor firemen as well.” Blow Grazes Cheek The whipping occurred yesterday outside Judge McEIlroy’'s office in the City Hall. Mrs. Wyatt got in one lash before she was disarmed by a City Hall attendant. The blow grazed the City Manager’s shoulder and left a red mark on his cheek. The 40-year-old housewife protested that her husband sometimes did not have the price of a cup of coffee in his pocket after fighting fires in cold weather. She borrowed the braided whip from a friend at the stockyards, she said, and had it concealed under her coat sleeve. She admitted fortifying her courage with a glass of beer at a saloon across the street. “A nickel beer is all the wives of firemen can afford.” Her husband, Lapsley Wyatt, who

“It's perfectly all right with me. If I'd had a chance I would have hit him myself,” he said.
