GRAND CALUMET DREDGING ASKED FROM CONGRESS
Predicts Improvement Would | Increase Population of District. Timez Rpecin? WASHINGTON, March 25. —Wid- | ening and deepening the Grand | Calumet River will increase the | popuiation of the Indiana Calumet industrial district from the present 360,000 to a half million within a few years, Rep. William T. Schulte (D, Ind.) told members of the House | Rivers and Harbors Committee, His proposal would cost $4,000.000, U. 8. Army engineers estimated. “The First Indiana District is now landlocked,” Mr. Schulte, who is himself a member of the committee, told them. “I am arguing that the Grand Calumet be made 22 feet deep and 300 feet wide. This will give a haven | to Lake Michigan boats now at the mercy of intense storms ard also establish waterway transportation for Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago, Indiana Harbor and Gary to sections now landlocked. Previously Urged Harbor “Mississippi barges could contact the area and the entire South would be opened to water shipment through through the Illinois River.” Rep. Schulte previously has urged a public harbor at East Chicago. He still will push this project, he Stated. Army engineers are now making surveys of bridges to determine what | reconstruction will be necessary should the river dredging be decided upon, he explained.

HOPES FOR LOWER WHISKY PRICES HIT
Supply Still Inadequate, Distillers’ Official Says.
I'imes Special
WASHINGTON, March 25.--Hope
for reduced prices on bended whis-
kv has been given a severe joit by Owsley Brown, chairman of board of the Distilled Spirits stitute. No reduction in distillers’ on American bottled-in-bond whisky this time, Brown said. Supplies of such whisky available for distribution in 1937 are inadequate to justify reductions. he asserted. “The demand for such whiskies is constantly increasing at present price levels,” he said. “The stocks which have been aging since manufacture was resumed at the time of repeal have not yet reached the age of four years required under the U. S. Bottled in Bond Act.”
