78 MEASURES GET SIGNATURE OF TOWNSEND
40 Other Bills Await His Action; Must Approve Them by Tomorrow.
The measure increasing the State distribution of school funds from $500 to $700 a year to each school unit was among 78 signed by Gov- |! ernor Townsend vesterday. Forty more bills passed by Legislature await his signature. He has until tomorrow to sign them. A provision in the school bill that each principal and supervisor be considered a teaching unit will increase the amount Indianapolis will receive annually by about $606,800 Other Bills Signed The Governor also signed the bill placing power of appointing police and firemen in the hands of a non- | partisan merit board Another measure he signed appropriates $1,000,000 as a revolving fund for loans to cities and towns in the southern Indiana flooded area for rehabilitation and local government Revocation of a driver's license upon conviction of manslaughter or | drunken driving is provided in another bill signed. He approved also the bill increasing penalties for liquor law violations. The Governor also signed the bill extending the State Milk Control Act The Governor put his signature on the bill relieving employees of pavments to the job insurance | fund "after April 1 and providing that employers continue payments,
Teacher Bill Approved
Among bills signed by the Governor was that providing retirement of Indiana public school teachers who begin service after July 1, 1939, when they reach 66 The bill also reduces the maximum service for retirement from 40 to 35 years, reduces the minimum service necessary for retirement on pension from 25 to 20 years and increases the maximum pension from $700 to $960 a year. The measure also calls for an increase of about 60 per cent in contributions by teachers to the retirewant fund . FUND REQUEST APPROVED B United WASHINGTON, March 12.—The Senate Audit Committee late yesterday approved a request by the Wheeler Senate Rail Inquiry group for $150,000 to continue its investigation. The subcommittee, headed by Senator Wheeler (D. Mont), already has received $100,000.
