The real estate tax burden for
public school support has lightened as the State support of education has increased, Carl Wilde, School Board vice president, told School 67 P.-T, A. last night, In 1931-32, he said, property taxes furnished 93.56 per cent of the School City's total receipts; in 193536 property taxes furnished only 78.04 per cent of the School City's total income, “In other words, property taxes for the Indianapolis public schools for 1935-36 were approximately $2
000,000 less than they were in 193132. | Assessment Decrease
“The assessed valuation of real estate has dropped $173,000,000 since | 1931, and the total budget for 1935- | 36 was over a million dollars less | than the 1931-32 budgets ” Mr. Wilde said the reduction in the operating costs of the schools had been made despite great ine creases in enrollment, especially in the high schools where the per capita cost of education is higher | than in the elementary schools. | He reviewed the school housing situation and emphasized the need of additional high school facilities, “We now have an overload in our high schools of more than 5000 pupils, not including the increase which may add 2000 more during the current school year,” he said.
Far Short of Goal
“We are still far short of our goal in providing modern school buildings for all Indianapolis school children. However, the progress made in removing portable build- | ings among the elementary schools has been gratifying. Six years ago, more than 3000 elementary school children were at. | tending classes in portable buildings. “This number has been decreased to approximately 790, It is the earnest desire of the School Board to continue the building program in order that ali of the high school | students may be housed in modern, suitable buildings.”
