Payment Expedited
She filed her claim at the local
office following the death of husband in January, and the local office expedited the payment by preparing the necessary affidavits. A U. S. Treasury check is to be sent, in settlement of Mrs. Smith's claim. The other seven Treasury checks will be sent to workers in Wilmington, New York City, Louisville, two in Huron, Mich., and two ih Minneapolis, The eight certifications ment out of the “Old-Age Account” set acide in the Treasury ihvolve small amounts. A lumpsum payment is made to a worker who reaches 65, in the event he is not, eligible for monthly retirement henefits, or to his estate if he dies before 65. The settlement is made on the basis of 3'2 per cent of the wages received after Dee. 31, 1936. A worker is not required to retire at 65 to receive the lump-sum benefit.

worker, no matter how is when he enters employment covered by the act, will receive in benefits more than he has paid in taxes on his wages under the act. The eight claims ified today were for 3'2 per cent of wages received. A tax of only 1 per cent of wages was paid by those who received these benefits. The Board's actuaries have calculated that claims may be made by 123,000 persons who reach 65 during 1937. The estimated number of claims filed by workers who become 65 prior to 1942 may increase in 1938 approximately 136,000 and probably will continue to grow until 1942, when a downward trend is foreseen. The Board expects payment of death claims to increase slowly for
