March 5.—The | j
going to make it as easy as possible | for President Roosevelt if he comes | |
here next month as he plans in quest of tarpon. All the old arguments are flaring up over calendars and tides, baits | and boats, and light and dark of] the moon. A doubtful few of them wiil be settled before the President | gets here, but he may have the] benefit of some expert discussions. Tarpon wrangling is the supreme | event in the life of a Southern sportsman, like the stalk of a lion to a hunter; the World Series to a baseball fan. It is a game for the professional and the rich man, properly equipped.
A Test of Skill
For while there may be only one or two ways to shoot a lion, the] landing of a tarpon is a prolonged test of skill and endurance involving many factors, of which locating the fish is a minor one. Throughont the briny deep, the silver king is one of the gamest and most elusive inhabitants, and | the most prized. Mr. Roosevelt has not decided | where on the Gulf Coast he would! like to fish. The fishermen would settle that point for him. It wiil| have to be where the tarpon are running, they say, and in April that | will be off the lower Texas shore. The calendars say the areas off Port Apansas and Port Isabel wiil be the best grounds. Tarpon will not have migrated as far north as| Freeport, another productive orale; ity. { Boat Is a Problem
The Freeport Chamber of Commerce had something else to say to that, but Apansas and Isabel were making a strong bid for the President's patronage. The old fisherman consulted his almanac and selected the dates between April 1 and 9, and April 23! and 30 for the President. “Fishing won't be consistent at other periods of the month because of unfavorable weather conditions,” he said. The President's boat is another] problem. The idea that Mr. Roose- | velt might want to fish off a yacht | was discouraging. He should, the old salts say, avail himself of a pro-,
| niques.
Clove (Peaches) Doucett, Oklahoma cowgirl, is the latest entry |! for trick and fancy riding contests at the Texas Rangers rodeo in the Coliseum April 3 to 11. The | rodeo is sponsored by the Press | Club for the benefit of the Police | Pension sion Fund,

fessional guide who has a boat! especially rigged for the sport. Being Fair to the Fish The tarpon, said Andy Anderson, |
| sports editor of the Houston Press
and authority on fish, knows his match in boats. Yachts frighten | him away. Besides, a fisherman said, how | would a tarpon look splattering up |
the varnished. side of a yacht with | a gaff in his back. “And anyhow, the average yacht | captain doesn't know how to fix = | bait, how to hold the proper troll- | ing speed or how to gaff a fish after |
| he has been hooked and reeled in.” |
So if Mr. Roosevelt will satisfy | the fishermen, he must put _out to | sea in a lugger, from where the tar- | pon will have a sporting chance | of landing the President.
