O. director; William B. held at St. Louis Nov. 8. Union Strong in East The new union's membership was placed at 17,000 in New and 3000 in Midwest shoe centers, including St. Louis and Milwaukee, The New England members now are affiliated with the United Shoe and Leather Workers’ Union and the Shoe Workers’ Protective Union. The protective group approved amalgamation by a referendum and United's general executive board approved the proposal this week. The board voted to place the C. I. O. in charge of the organizing campaign, with Powers Hapgood, Indianapolis, and Adolph Germer, C. I. O. representatives appointed by Mr. Brophy, to head the organization drive in co-operation with the Shoe Workers’ Organizing Committee. Members of the United group already have voted to pay 5 per cent of their wages for five weeks into the campaign fund of the new committee. Meetings will be held in shoe centers next week.

U. S. W. A. is Brockton’s powerful Brotherhood of Shoe and Allied Craftsmen, which rejected an amalgamation proposal by a close margin.

First Year’s Work Provided For California Field, Rep. Carter Says.

WASHINGTON, March 4.—Con= |

gressional approval of the $1,000,000 Alameda, Cal, Naval Air Station project was forecast today by Rep. Albert E. Carter (R. Cal) who said the fund carried in the Navy Supply Bill “is all that is wanted for the first year construction program.” The appropriation would be used to acquire a site and start work on buildings, bulkheads and dredgings.

“The whole program is satisfac- |

tory,” said Mr. Carter. “We have

got everything we have asked for.

I expect the appropriation to go through without change.” Expenditure of the fund, however, will probably hinge on action of Congress on an authorization
