PHONE SYSTEM TO BE REBUILT ~ INFLOOD ZONE
New Equipment To Replace Units Damaged by Water.
Reconstruction forces of the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. are repairing and plants along the entire 250-mile flood front as fast as waters recede from inundated areas About 3000 of 19.500 telephones in Evansville, the largest city affected in the territory served by the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. out of service. Most of these will have to be replaced. Flood water did not enter the telephone building in Evansville, and the distributing plant is not thought to be greatly damaged. Telephone engineers and construetion crews are on hand ready to re- | pair and replace any damaged equipment as quickly as it becomes accessible New Albany Office Dry

machines on the first floor were!
trucked to Indianapolis where they were dried out and reconditioned The machines were returned to New Albany for temporary installation until replacing units can be secured

Wants Bidders on Projects To Name Auxiliary Firms |
In Advance. | Times Special WASHINGTON, Feb. 4. — Rep. |
(enn Griswold has secured a fa- | vorable committee report on his
measure requiring ali contractors bidding on Government projects to name subcontractors in advance.
Last session he got a similar bill to the floor, but it lacked five votes of passage. He explains that it is aimed at “briefcase contractors,” who have nothing but estimates from subcon« tractors for their bids, and force down these estimates after they have received the award “so that the subcontractor must cut labor costs or lose, while the general con« tract holder makes a handsome profit.” As a member of the Committee on Executive Expenditures, Mr. Gris(wold will head a subcommittee to | hold hearings next week on repeal-
