TERRE HAUTE CAR

STRIKE SETTLED

WITH PAY RAISE

Service Expected to Be

Resumed at 5 A. M. Tomorrow.

Streetcar and bus service is ex- | pected to be resumed in Terre Haute at 5 a. m. tomorrow, following issuance of an order by Judge Herbert E. Wilson of Marion County Superior Court, providing a 20 | per cent wage increase to employees. Under provisions of the order, Bowman Elder, Indiana Railroad receiver, is to file a new tariff with

the Public Service Commission to | increase the fare from 5 to 6 cents. Terre Haute, an industrial city of 63,000 population, has been without municipal transportation since union workers called a strike Jan. 117. The compromise was arranged at a four-hour conference here yesterday in which representatives of

the Terre Haute City administra- |

tion, Chamber of Commerce, Mer- | chants’ Association, and the Amalgamated Association of Street and ‘Electric Railway and Motor Bus | Operators’, Union and Mr. Elder | participated. The Indiana Railroad, which operates interurban lines as well as the Terre Haute system, recently compromised a wage dispute with other employees by granting a 1215 per cent increase. An arbitration board previously had ordered a flat 20 per cent raise, but Mr. Elder's threat to close the entire system brought about the compromise. The new agreement affects only employees in the Terre Haute city system. The fare increase is expected to finance the wage raise.

a mad scramble it would be if we all wanted the same thing. It’s the different ideas that different people have that keeps this old world balanced like she is. Some people don't care what they do or what they have as long as they have good health. Some people are not satisfied unless

they're workin’ all the time, while /

some people work just twice as hard to keep out of work. A man is purty lucky if he’s doin’ something that he likes to do. When you want work and can’t find it you naturally imagine that anybody with a job would be happy, but it don't always work out that way. I had an uncle one time who had a steady job for years but he was never happy. Finally one day he took sick. The doctor come to the house and examined him and he called my aunt out on the front porch and he whispered to her, “I'm awfully sorry to tell you this, but your husband will never work again.’ My aunt says, “Well, now, you wait here, Doctor, I'll run back and tell him. It'll kinda cheer him up a little bit.” (Copyright, 1937)

Opposition to & proposed bill which partially wou ld eliminate tax exemptions now accorded educational, charitable, fr -aternal and religious institutions was reported growing by State legislators today.

More than 20 representatives of private and denomi inational educational institutions laid plans to oppose the measure ai a meeting in the Columbia Club yesterday. James W. It is in recess now due to the flood emergency. The total amount ducing property owned by nonState colleges and now tax exempt is $1,300,000, it was claimed at yesterday’s meeting. expressed earlier to visitors interested in strike developments, Mr. Roosevelt stated:

“I told them I was not only disappointed in the refusal of Mr. Sloan to- come down here, but I regarded it as a very unfortunate decision on his part.” Miss Perkins did not disclose whether she ‘had any new peace plan to discuss with union representatives. She indicated she had not given up hope of a peaceful settlement despite the deadlock over U. A.
