3QUADSDIEAFTER | AMBULANCE CRASH

| By United Press | MONTREAL, Jan. 22.—Three of the quadruplets born to Mr. and Mrs. Arcade Bondeau died in St. Justine Hospital foday a few-hours after an ambulance, which was rushing from nearby St. Thomas Village, collided on the slippery highway and crashed into a snowplow. The dead babies were two boys - and a girl. The fourth child, a girl, was said to have shown ‘marked improvement.” ? : The quadruplets, born yesterday and christened shortly afterward | because their mother feared they! would die, were brought to the hos- | pital here on the order of Provincial | authorities who feared they could | not be given proper care in the; meager Rondeau home in St. Thomas. > The nurse, Jeanne Talbot, and the driver . of the ambulance, Maurice Beaudry, were seriously injured in the crash.

Pneumonia and influenza spread | in the wake of the devastating | floods; serious food and fuel short- | ages developed at several points; | water supply was contaminated; | many were still marooned, without proper food and shelter. The towns of Arbyrd, in southeast | Missouri, and Lester, in northeast | Arkansas, were inundated. | Cardwell and Kennett, Mo., were | practically isolated, and Lepanto, | Ark., was in the path of a floodway | that was sure to be flooded with the | expected break of the Big Lake— | f§ Little River—west of Blytheville, Ark. A check showed at least 12,250 persons driven from their homes in the three states. Four deaths were attributed di- | rectly and indirectly to the floodwaters. . Army Issues Warning First indications of a major flood on the Mississippi River itself came | late yesterday when U., S. Army engineers issued a warning to 2000 persons residing in the Bird's PointNew Madrid, Mo., floodway. The floodway, extending from below Cairo, Ill, to New Madrid, is protected by a levee which engineers said might not be able to withstand the 55-foot stage already in sight. At Cairo, Ill, the stage was 53.6, a rise of 2.1 feet in 24 hours. The stage at New Madrid was 414, a 1ise of 1.3 feet. At Memphis it was 36.3, a rise of 1.6. Helena, Ark, gauged the river at 44.5, a rise of 1.4. Latest estimates showed property damage of more than $750.000 in the mid-South area. At least 600,000 acres of land had been inundated. ‘Engineers gave up the fight to | save the east side St. Francis levee
