LEGION DRAFTS WAR MEMORIAL LEVY MEASURE
~ Bill Would Provide for Restoration of Expired 4-Mill - Tax.
A special American Legion legislative committee composed of Le-
gionnaires who are members of the
House of Representatives today w
drafting a bill to provide for completion of the Indiana War Memorial Plaza. The measure is to be the pkincipal feature of thc Legion's. pko gram which was presented lagt night at a dinner for Legion legisla! tors in the Claypool Hotel. It. would provide for the restoration of the 4-mill tax, which expired two years ago, for the purpose

at an estimated cost of $700,000, and the construction of a | companion building to the American Legion Building on St. Clair St. -to cost $500,000. An additional $400,000 would be spent for landscaping and other improvements.
Drafters of Bill Picked
~ Legislators chosen to draft the bill are Reps. J. Earl McCurdy (D. La Porte), Glenn R. Slenker (R. Monticello) and Theodore J. Spurgeon (D. Ligonier). Municipal Judge Wilfred Bradshaw explained the proposed legislation at the dinner meeting. “The Indigna World War Memorial never will be considered complete until the two churches are removed. They mar the beauty of the Memorial itself. It is the duty of the State of Indiana to complete it,” he said. : It was pointed out at the meeting that the four-mill levy would continue for an indefinite period of time and would be removed when the Memorial was completed. WPA aid may be secured which would reduce the cost to the State approximately 30 per cent, it was said.
Churches Not Approached
State Commander Charles Maston said the churches have not been approached on the matter. “They know they eventually will have to move and consequently they hesitate to make improvements on their property. It is unfair to them to keep the matter hanging fire any longer,” he said. : The value of the churches has been appraised as approximately 35 per cent less now than it was in 1928. . “This is the logical time to buy the property,” Judge Bradshaw stated.
Pledge Safety Support
Legion support of the proposed safety legislation to be introduced soon was pledged by organization officers. Sheriff Ray, state legislative chairman who presided at last night’s meeting, said the organization is interested especially ina uniform driving law. Other points in the Legion's program include: Co-operation by Indiana and the interstate anticrime compacts; an amendment to the Uniform Guardian Act; registration of veterans’ graves; a full budget for the Knightstown Home for children of deceased veterans, and a change in burial permit forms.
IODINE NEEDS TOPIC OF VETERINARIAN

POLIGE SPREAD NET FOR MATTSON KILLER
By United Press TACOMA, Wash., Jan. 21.—Search for the kidnap-slayer of Charles Matson extended to the slums of Pacific Coast cities today as police worked on the theory that the kidnaper, failing to collect the ransom, and fearful of attempting to obtain employment or relief, would seek a cheap hideout.
More than a score of suspects were detained in five Northwest cities and almost as many more were held in other sections as a
result of orders by J. Edgar Hoover,
head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to roundup all suspicious characters.
\ In Portland, Ore., George Wilson; 38, was still booked as ‘held for Federal Government.” He had shouted; imprecations against Dr. W. W. Mattson, father of ‘the kidnap victim, when arrested, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail on a technical charge of vagrancy.
