Offering Customers Liquid Inducement to Attend Cafe-Licensed Theater.

By GEORGE ROSS NEW YORK, Jan. 21.—(NEA)—The only theaters in New York where playgoers can get entertainment and liquid refreshment at the same time are the Metropolitan Opera House and the American Music Hall. The other showshops are as arid as the Sahara, uniess a person happens$ to be carrying his own flask. That is the law, although a quick one between®

the acts of some shows around here is as vital as a bottle of

smelling salts. Sometimes a customer at the Met

medicinal purposes, but over at the American Music Hall, where they play such pieces as “Murder in the Old Red Barn” and “The Drunkard,” a tipple is as important as‘a ticket. The hero has to be cheered, the heroine applauded and the villian hissed, and there is nothing more stimulating for such purposes, it is held, than a modest draught.

Getting Around Law

Officially the American Music Hall is entered as a cafe, ducks the nonalcoholic law, and the fellow who started this noble institution is none other {uan Ann Harding's exhusband, Harry Bannister. It was 2 little more than four years ago that Banister, newly di- | vorced, came to Maw York to regai nhis fame as an'actor. But opportunities were scarce. So Bannister took whatever fortune he had and invested it in a show whigh came and went as through a revolving door. Broke, he sat around at the ac-. midday rendezvous, Sardi’s, and wondered what to-do next. A fellow pauper told him about an old church on the east side that was

went over and took the deserted house of worship under lease, renamed it the American Music Hall and looked for a play on which he would not have to pay any roylaties. |

Makes Brewery Deal

He chose the old Barnum temperance classic, “The Drunkard,” ard rounded up a collection of players willing to take a chance on the profits. Then he made a deal at a brewery; offered to hand out samples as an advertising scheme, But he paid out of his own pockets for

the pretzels. “Within a. month, the American Music Hall became a popular, local institution and Bannister was sitting pretty. Within six months, he had drawn enough profits to buy a chicken farm in New Jersey. A year later, he retired from the drama and drink palace and settled down to a rustic life. He is now a ‘thriving poultryman in the state across the river

city line when circumstances bring him over. Now that Miss Harding is safely married to Werner Jans-

probably will be fewer, and New York will see less of him than ever,

Strangely, this isn’t a case of “It can’t be done!” The correct answer is, “It has been done!” When the comedian was 23, he played the role of the immortal Shakespearean character for ‘two weeks with a small company in his home town of Toledo.
