Power Plant Failures Here Won’t Leave Surgeons ‘In the Dark.

Indianapolis surgeons are not likely to experience the trouble recently reported at Newark, N. J, when a breakdown in the city’s electrical system caught hospitals without emergency lights and forced surgeons to complete operations by flashlight rays.

major operation was preformed by candle-light in an Indianapolis hospital,- a survey showed today. - Dr. Charles Myers, City Hospital superintendent, finished an appendectomy at that time by candle and flashlight in the St. Francis surgery during a heavy electrical storm. Since then a substation has been built to serve Beech Grove. Two hospitals, the Methodist and St. Vincent’s, have emergency battery lamps to light surgeries. City Hospital is served by its own plant and has an emergency “stand-by” service arrangement with the local utility company. Portable Light Unit

Charles Bowman, Methodist Hospital chief engineer, designed special battery equipment. Set on wheels, it can be sent into any of the fourth floor surgeries. It is equipped with six-volt lamps. In addition to the emergency unit, the Methodist has two direct power lines. The battery outfit has not been needed since it-was built 12 years ago, Mr. Bowman said. At St. Vincent's Hospital, where two lines serve the surgery, two modern portable lamps, operated by batteries recently were purchased. “Standby” Service Available

If current is interrupted at Riley or Long hospitals served by a private generating plant, a “standby service” is available from the Indianapolis Power & Light Co. Several years have passed since this was necessary, according to the engineer there, who said the current was shut off for 15 minutes at one time. The hospital surgery was. not in use when the current cut out, he said. _The same plant serves Long, Riley and Coleman Hospitals, the medical and dental schols and the Ball and Rotary homes.

PILOT MAY REVEAL CAUSE OF CRASHES

Lewis, whose skillful crash landing of a: Western Air Express saved the lives of 11 of 13 persons, Federal investigators today awaited an answer to the question of what causes transport planes to crash while flying in familiar territory.
