John Wesley Robe ..
John Wesley Robe Recalls Scorn Was Lot of First Co-eds.
© Times Special GREENCASTLE, Ind. Jan. 14.— John Wesley Robe, nearing the century mark himself, is DePauw’s oldest living graduate. He spoke recently on the university's Centennial broadcast on a national chain.
Graduated in 1868, he is 93. As the ~ 4 oldest alumnus, he carries the De- | Pauw cane. When he first received the cane he never thought he would use it. - “But,” he said today, “I've got to the place where I carry it almost every day.” DePauw was 31 years old" when Mr. Robe graduated. There were 25 men in his class and no women. It Yas the largest class up to that ime.
One Building Sufficed
One school building—old Asbury College—housed: the entire school. It had a chapel on the first floor, recitation rooms on the second, and the library and offices for the seven ‘teachers on the third floor. - - During his junior year Mr. Robe recalled, the directors of Asbury * voted to admit women. Four women students entered. They were regarded with scorn by the men, Mr. Robe said. He delivered his junior oration in their defense. Mr. Robe left school to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. He recalls the stand made by the Union forces at the bridge across the ‘Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served four months,
His Tree Is Gone
At that time, his family lived in Morgan County, but after neighbors killed his father for his avowed
“ _ Union sympathies, the family moved
to Greencastle. Mr. Robe still wears with pride. his Lincoln memorial . badge and G. A. R. button. Memento of Mr. Robe’s class-of ’68 are the trees which stand today on East College campus. But Mr.
Robe’s particular tree is no more.
A professor's cow, grazing on the - campus, broke it down and ate off

all the leaves the day after he planted it. An ardent supporter of DePauw today, he said he was grateful for the opportunity to participate in its centennial program.
