SCHOOL BOARD TO ELECT NEW HEADS TONIGHT

Two Members Will Begin Terms; Petition to Be Discussel.

Election of officers, inauguration -of two new board members and a report on a petition for improved _ sanitary conditions at School 68, are scheduled for consideration at the first 1937 School Board meeting to- *« night. After nearly six years of service, Merle Sidener is to retire tonight. . Samuel E. Garrison also is to retire, after four years with the board. The two new members who are to take office tonight are Earl Buchanan and John F. White, both "former City Council members. They " were elected to the Board in 1934.

Residents File Petition

A petition requesting adequate sanitary conditions at School 68 was filed by residents near the .school, located at 4417 E. 21st-st. They ~ also asked improved facilities, including better police and fire pro- " tection and widening of the streets adjacent to the building. Paul C. Stetson, School Superintendent, said the majority of requests were outside the Board's jurisdiction and must be referred to Civil City authorities. In a radio address over WFBM yesterday, when incumbent board members were introduced to the public, Carl J. Wilde, board president, reported advances made during the last six years in improving - public school facilities.

Portable Buildings Condemned

“When the board members elected in 1929 took office we found more than 3000 children were attending classes in portable buildings, some of which had been in use for more than 14 years,” Mr. Wilde said. “These conditions not only were undesirable from a sanitary point of view, but were, in many cases, haz-

.. ardous,”

Mr. Wilde said at the present time only 790 elementary school children are housed in portable structures. Mr. Wilde praised the services of Mr. Sidener and Mr. Garrison, saying, “They and their associates have carried out the Citizens Scheol Committee platform that Indianapolis schools would be operated without hint of political, sectarian or personal -bias.”
