NEW METHODS
TOFIGHT VIRUS |
DISEASES SEEN.
Medical World Standing At Door of New Era, Dietz Says.
By DAVID DIETZ Times Science Editor NEW YORK, Jan. 11.—Medicine may be standing today upon the edge of a second renaissance comparable to the one which was introduced in the last half of the 19th Century by the formulation of the germ theory of disease and the work of that great triumvirate of bacteriology, Pasteur, Koch and Lister. + Following the work of these three giants, a new era dawned in medicine. Pasteur and Koch had discovered the germs of a number of diseases while. Lister had laid the foundations for antiseptic surgery. Advances in both medicine and surgery came swiftly. It was hoped that a specific germ would be found to be the cause of every disease and that a specific vaccine, serum or antitoxin would be found to combat every disease. While this method was spectacularly successful in the conquest of many diseases as for example diphtheria, | it failed badly in others. Viruses Resist Serum Certain diseases, such as influenza and infantile paralysis, turned out to be the results of invisible agents, the ‘so-called filterable viruses, while certain germ diseases, notably tuberculosis, resisted every effort to manufacture a satisfactory vaccine or serum. Those who attended the symposium on virus diseases held in Philadelphia under the auspices of .the American PhilBsophical society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, may have witnessed the beginning of this second renaissance. : For at this meeting new techniques both in dealing with virus and bacterial diseases were reported. These techniques hold so much: promise for the future that it may well be that the failures of bacteriologists in the closing decades of the 19th Century and the opening decades of the 20th Century will be speedily remedied. ¢
