& athletic officials believe. -
That's why they have arranged a new physical training program, designed to provide definite and thorough instruction in various ‘“carryover” athletic activities. Culver officials believe the program is a pioneer step in the promotion of athletic activity, once graduates leave academies, colleges and universities. . The new program in no way is to interfere with the extensive varsity and intramural set-up at Culver, cfficials point out, but it serves to give each boy basic instruction in varied sports. This, in turn, gives him an opportunity to make a selection in which to specialize. “Under . the new program,” explains Col. Allen Elliott, Department nf Health and Athletics chairman, “all first and second-year men are divided .into various groups and assigned to a particular type of instruction two afternoons a week during the regular drill period.” Until April 15, students are to receive regular instructions in the following: Posture training, calisthenics, apparatus work and tumbling, swimming, boxing, riding, badminton, wrestling, fencing, golf, diving, squash racquets, life saving and rowing. Every effort is made to get boys whose interests lie mainly in major sports, such as basketball and football, to take up at least one “carry over” activity which they may follow after college and school days, Col. Elliott said.
