Rep. Treadway to Sponsor
- Reduction of Tax-Free Real Estate List.
Indiana’s Legislature Tuesday is to begin the consideration of placing tax-exempt properties, valued at $30,000:000, on the tax rolls with the introduction of a series of bills by Rep. william E. Treadway (D., Spencer). v Rep. Treadway, a member of the Joint Legislative Tax Survey Commission, said today that between four and five bills dealing with state tax problems would be introduced in the House Tuesday. One measure, he said, would seek to place all revenue-producing property owned by lodges, churches and charitable organizations on tax rolls. : * Lodges and groups with such tax‘empt business buildings would be given three years under the measure to shift their investments or
place the buildings on the tax dupli-
cates. Annuities Tax Also Sought
A second bill, Rep. Treadway said, would ben the right of property
owners to deed land to educational |
institutions and fraternal groups and retain tax-exempt annuities in their property. "A third measure, which. may be introduced, is to give $800 to each teaching unit in the state which continues to carry the 20 per cen} burden of the Social Security Act. Governor-elect Townsend has pledged teaching units $600. At present the state pays each unit $500. Recodification of tax-exempt ‘property laws will be necessary to limit exemptions to property used
exclusively for fraternal and benevo- |
lent purposes, it was said. Repeal of the holding company law and a measure to require counties to levy for gravel roads instead of selling bonds also may be intro‘uced by the commission.
