G-MENTO BRING STAMP FANCIER HERE FOR TRIAL

F. Vernon Smith, Charged With Fraud, Sought Loan From F. D. R.

Federal agents from Indianapolis _are to leave soon for Portland, Ore, to return F. Vernon Smith, Indian2pals stamp collector, for trial on rges of using the mails to deI ud. - -Smith is accused of having solicited a number of stamp: collectors in the country. for stamps he said a client wanted to buy, and of soliciting another group to sell stamps he said a client wanted to liquidate. After he collected between $800 and $1000, Federal Agents claim, he left Indianapolis and neither delivered stamps: to buyers nor cash to sellers. At about the same time, Val Nolan, U. S. District Attorney said, he wrote a letter to President Roosevelt telling him all about his own fraud and asking the President to lend $800 instead. Gave F. D. R. Power of Alornoy To secure the loan. Federal Agents said, he made over his power of attorney to the President and made him beneficiary of a $1000 insurance pelicy. In this bundle of papers he sent the President, Federal Agents claim, he inclosed two notes to his wife. One was to be mailed if the President made the loan, the other if he didn’t. He made arrangements with the President in the letter, Federal Agents claim, to forward the money, if loaned, to general delivery, Washington, by a certain date. None of these documents ever reached the President, Mr. Nolan said, but were intercepted by a secretary and turned over to postal authorities. Smith then left, Mr.
