VANS HIGH IN PRAISE OF F.D.R.'S SPEECH
Indiana Senator Jubilant Over President’s Views On Constitution.
By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer : WASHINGTON, Jan. 7.—Senator Frederick VanNuys was jubilant today over President Roosevelt's message to Congress. For the President expressed the view that remedies for present evils can be found without a constitutional amendment if the courts will follow a more flexible interpretation.
Senator VanNuys, as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has opposed “tinkering with the Constitution” and declares that legislation can be properly drafted to meet the New Deal demands. Thus the President has put his approval on the Hoosier Senator's views, rather than that of Senator Joseph Robinson, the majority leader, who urged a constitutional amendment to give Congress the power to legislate on minimum wages and maximum hours. “Senator Sherman Minton approved of Senator Robinson’s view saying “If the Constitution isn’t right, let’s make it right.” Senator Minton said he saw nothing in the President’s speech which would be contrary to that stand and asserted that the only law that could remedy the court situation would be one requiring seven of the nine Supreme Court justices to vote a law unconstitutional. This plan was advanced by Senator Minton following the AAA decision last session, Senator VanNuys, who served on the Democratic steering committee last session, has been made a member of the new policy committee announced by Leader Robinson. This committee will co-operate with a similar one from the House in determining the course of legislation for the majority and administration.
