GOVERNOR HINTS PAY INCREASES AT UNIVERSITIES

New Building Construction Also Promised in Radio Address.

A promise of increased salaries and additional building construction programs at Indiana and Purdue Universities and the state normal schools at Muncie and Terre Haute was indicated by Governor McNutt in a radio address last night.

“Legislators will have the problem of determining the question of restoring at least part of the reduced salaries because of increased living expenses,” he said. Construction work is to be continued, the Governor said, in announcing that the contingency fund, used for this in the past, would continue to be administered by the budget committee and the Governor. Repairs and expansion of penal and correctional institutions may be expected next year, the Governor

said. He termed the condition of |

one dormitory at the Michigan City Prison “deplorable” and a “fire hazard.”

More Spending Hinted

Indicating further increased expenditures for the next two years, Governor McNutt pointed out that more than 50,000 aged, 22,500 dependent children and 2400 blind persons will be cared for under provisions of the Public Welfare Act. Expenditures of approximately $2,626,342 for unemployment compensation will be met almost entirely by Federal funds allocated to this state, the Governor said.
