‘Penny’ Stocks Are Novice Lures,

Flynn Says. eee BY JOHN T. FLYNN

EW YORK, Dec. 22 Mr. Charles R. Gay, president of the New York Stock Exchange, is concerned over what is called = “penny-stock” flurry in the stock market. “Penny” stocks are those shares which sell for a few dnllars. To a person with limited means and a desire for quick and easy profits. it looks like a simple thing

to buy a hundred shares of a stock selling for, Jet us say, $5. His investment will be only $500 and if the stock should only “double itself” -a favorite expression of 1928 and 1929 which is beginning to be heard again ~he will have a 100 per eent profit on the money risked. There ecan be there has been activity in shares we take the on the New in recent one 18

Indianapolis Private Awards

Account for $621,000 Of Month's Total.

Private construction contracts in|

Indianapolis during November were more than three times the November, 1935 total, figures released by F. W. Dodge Corp. revealed today.

In step with mounting private construction throughout the nation, Indianapolis private awards for the | month accounted for $621,000 of the $666,000 building total, it ‘was | shown. Private construction awards in November, 1935 were reported to have been $183,000.

“This record for the Indianapolis metropolitan area makes a favor|able comparison with the November | total for the entire 37 states east of | the Rockies where only 58 per cent 'of the total represented privata projects while the remainder cov- | ered public construction of all types. [In November, 1935 private construction in the 37 states accounted for less than 40 per cent of the total,” the report said.

Figures Include County

“During the January through | November period of this year private construction advanced 39 per cent in the Indianapolis metropolitan |area as represented in the sum of $6,378,000, comparing favorably with 84, 594,200 in the similar period of | last year.’

| These figures are drawn for the | Indianapolis metropolitan area | which covers Marion County ‘which | had a total 1930 population of 422, | 666 persons.

{ The 11-month total for all types { of construction awards for the .Jan{uary through November period of | the current year made a 17 per cent | Jump in the Indianapolis area over | the similar period of 1935, the report continued. $10,544,500 was spent for | construction in the Indianapolis | area during this time as compared | with’ $8,997,300 in the similar period | of 1935, it said. Home Owners Catalog Division of | F. W. Dodge Corp. reports that resi- | dential building made a good advance in the current November over November of last year. This type of construction amounted to $278, - [000 in the current November as ‘compared with $94,500 in November of 1935. | Non-residential building made a [good advance in the elapsed 11 | months of 1936 when it amounted [to $6,452,300, thus including an 83 | per cent jump over $3,525.900 which | was the total for the similar period of 1935.
