High Steel Prices Bad Influence,

ITTSBURGH, Dec. 21. Here in the steel capital one hears, before being here very long, of rising steel business and rising prices. Mavbe rising prices are necessary. But the phenomenon sends a shiver of hesitation up and down the spines of the optimists. Only a few | weeks ago good | news went out of the steel mills. It was that workers would get a 10 per cent increase in purchasing power. But, this was followed soon by rumblings about price increases of steel —33 a ton, for instance. This, of course, means that workers purchasing power will inerease 10 per cent in the steel industry, but that a corresponding decrease in the purchasing power of those who buy steel products will be brought about by raising steel prices.
