LANDIS’ DECISION ISN'T CONSISTENT, JOE SAY

Reds’ Owner Contends He Got Raw Deal

Claims Judge Gave Reverse Ruling in Cincinnati Situation.

BY JOE WILLIAMS

Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Dec. 18. —Tt is difficult to compromise a princi ple for an expedient and make all hands happy. This was Judge Landis’ way of handling the Bob Feller case The decision was hailed as a happy solution of a sturbing problein— In ( b y ry Mr. Powel Crosley, owner of the Cincinnati Reds, did not 1ixe H Pointedly, h e

charged the old judge had given the Reds a raw

deal. In effect, the gentleman said, ‘Landis took two players away from Williams me on the same charge and refused to do anvthing about Feller.

It doesn’t make sense.” The charge was for violating the then existing sandlot law which prohibited major league club to sign raw material at its source. The old judge discovered the Reds had signed John Peacock, a catcher and

an infielder contrary Whereupon he de-

clared both men free agents and they promptly proceeded to sell themselves to other clubs. Identical circumstances marked the Feller case, but the old judge, in a 200-word decision, a masterpiece in vacuity, ruled Cleveland was entitled to ownership. The in-

consistency of the decision is patent |

Indiana-Purdue Game Gets First Official Recognition;

Writer Warns Fans About Being Left With Empty Stockings Jan. 16.

HE date is Jan. 16. The place is Bloomington. The time is 8:15. All'of which is a rather elaborate windup to the point that if you can get tickets to the Indiana-Purdue game for that date you're in for a great evening. As a matter of fact, from the way the two teams are shaping up, it might not be a bad idea if the postmaster got some new stamps made. My idea is not only “Do Your Christmas Shopping Early,” but “Get Your Indiana-Purdue Tickets Pronto.” Even the Tower of Trester is reported to be a little shaky, in dire fear that the Purdue-Indiana home-and-home battles this season will steal the big thunder

away from the high school boys.

You see, it's even got us. The Indianapolis City Tournament is to be played on Jan. 15 and 16 and it’s taken us this far down to mention it. Prankly, we've almost argued ourcelves out of going to the city tourney. » » UST about two weeks ago I dipped into (or rather talked up) this ® big center business. Well, folks, Purdue and Indiana have centers who are rivals for the title now held by that celebrated picture of the Queen Mary when laid end up. And, as the fates would have it, both of em are Indianapolis bovs., Indiana has Fred Fechtman, who is varicusly reported to be 6 feet, 7 inches, and 8 feet, 8': inches, Purdue's man is Jim Seward, who has been accurately measured at 8 feet, 63% inches. Normally, Fred and Jim don’t even have to rock on tip toes to get the tip-off. But on the evening of Jan. 18 both of those roof-scraping habies are going to have to jump! After all, little Jim can nearly look Fred in the eve. (It's going to be quite & sensation for Jim to reach out and shake hands with an opposing center without creasing in the middle.) All in all, it's going to be quite a fracas, as the sports writers say. » ” " » » NOTHER sellout is tonight's game between Martinsville and Columbus at Columbus. The Bartholomew County boys are more than anxious to defeat Martinsville and come what may it

is certain to be a swell battle. When Glen Curtis fails to turn out a Martinsville team that isn’t a top ranking outfit, that, folks, will be

By United Press The first meeting in history betweeh Farlham and Evansville, at Evansville tonight, highlights an eight-game program involving Indiana college teams over the weekend. Evansville and Earlham boast undefeated records this season. In the two other games scheduled tonight Indiana State will entertain Manchester and Concordia will play at Bluffton, O. The Hoosier “big three” will leave their home floors for the first time tomorrow night. Indiana’s quintet invades the East for an encounter with Manhattan at New York, Illinois will be host to Notre Dame, and Purdue plays at Depaul. | Butler, defeated this week by Pur[due and Pittsburgh, will entertain Indiana Central. | Rose Poly will invade St. Joseph's {in the other Indiana Inter-Collegi-ate Conference basketball game.

Quakers Win Fourth Consecutive Game

Times Special GREENCASTLE, Ind. Dec. 18. Earlham College today ran well ahead of the rest of the Indiana Intercollegiate conference basketball field after defeating De Pauw, 23 to 19. It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Quakers this season. A field goal by Bull, center, gave the Earlham an 11-to-9 lead at the
