Greetings!

Mary Christmas of Texas Glad Her Home Is Not Santa Claus.

USTIN, Tex. Dec. 18 A a Merry Christmas greeting

from Mary Christmas, Racine, Wis, gave Mary Christmas, Austin, Tex., her greatest holiday

thrill and revealed to the Texas girl that she can now share her vuletide prominence “It's nice to have a rival,” said Texas Mary Christmas, as she recalled the many annoyances that have come from her unusual name. Mary doubted if the rival would lighten her 1936 Christmas load. “You know it's no cinch being named Mary Christmas,” she said, smiling. “I get hundreds of cards from people I don’t know, and sometimes 1 get gifts. At first I tried to answer all of them, but

that's impossible. I do well just to keep track of them all. Mary likes her name, though the publicity is sometimes ‘“irritating.” Oh yes. And she Is especially

CHURCH BATTLE

SEEN AS SEQUEL T0 ABDICATION

Archbishop's Attack on King Held Attempt to Regain Church Prestige.

BY HERBERT LITTLE

Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 -—-Wijzened, 72-year-old Cosmo Gordon Lang, ninety-seventh Archbishop of Canterbury and head (under the King) of England's established church, apparently faces a conflict

for prestige similar to those historic battles which, when statecraft was more violent than today, cost two of his predecessors their lives. The archbishop’s attack on the

| morals of England's gay sets, follow-

ing his flinty opposition to King Edward's marrying a divorcee, is in-

terpreted by some historians as a renewal of the long effort to rehabilitate the church's waning

power over the English people. The diminishing influence of the Anglican Church has been noted by many, including the Encyclopedia Brittannica, in recent vears. Its most notable failure was the double defeat of the revised praver book in the House of Commons eight vears ago—although the church assembly itself had two times approved it.

Led Prayer Book Fight

Archbishop Lang, who became head of the church in 1928, following those defeats, was one of the leaders in the campaign for the praver book. Earlier, as Arch(second ranking the church) he had fought for it in the House of Lords.

He and four other high churchmen have seats in that body and take
