"Omer Stokes Jackson, who was appointed Attorney General yesterday by Gov. McNutt to succeed Philip Lutz Jr., probably will remain state chairman for the time Being, the Governor said. * Since 1937 is an off election year, Mr. Jackson may not be replaced until 1938, it was reported. At that time Mr. Heller may become state chairman, according to reports.
Vacancy Filled
_ Gov. McNutt also appointed Circuit Judge A. J. Stephenson of Hendricks County as first assistant attorney general, a position which had been vacant during most of Mr. Luf® term. The $5000 salary has been returned to the state general fund, Mr. Lutz said, since the late Judge Fred Wiecking was transferred to the Public Service Commission: more than a year ago. Mr. Jackson, whose election to the state committee was dictated by Gov. McNutt, is closer to the Governor’s organization than to Mr. Townsend's, it is reported. He is from Greenfield. A successor to Mr. Heller as state secretary probably will be discussed at a Democratic meeting in French Lick Friday. The . meeting was changed from Turkey Run State Park. It also was reported today that Mr. Heller and Mr. Townsend will check all state appointments before approval is given to recommendations of department heads. Democratic members of the House and Senate are to attend the session. They are to select, Speaker, majority floor leader-afid caucus chairman for the House and president pro tem. and caucus chairman for the Senate.
VIRUSES AS FACTOR IN CANCER DOUBTED
By United Press NEW YORK, Dec. 15.—Viruses, disease-causing agents that defy the power of the keenest microscopes to make them visible, are not an essential factor in cancers in man and other mammals, Dr. J. B. Murphy, director of cancer research at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, told fellow scientists at the cancer institute meeting held by the University of Wisconsin Medical School. There seems to be no doubt, Dr. Murphy commented, that a virus may under certain conditions act as incitor of malignant tumors, but as far as tumors of man and other mammals are concerned, there is no evidence that viruses are involved in the essential process. They act as cancerous agents, he explained, and as such play a part in the casual origin but not in the formal origin of tumors.
