Professor Who Has Read ‘Carol’ 31 Years Finds New Appreciation.

By United Press

CHAPEL Hill, N. C,, Dec. 15.—

The spirit of Christmas, in the form |

of Tiny Tim and, old Scrooge, characters of Dickens’ immortal jC mas Carol,” comes early to | Dr. Frederick H, Koch, head of the Carolina Playmakers. With the yuletide season days away, Dr. Koch begins each year 8 holiday activity that for 21 Christmas seasons has brought him before audiences in every part of America—the | reading of |the “Christmas Carol” in public. | Against a simple backdrop, usually a couple of cedar branches draped with tinsel, Dr. Koch reads the story of the three ghosts who taught Ebenezer Scrooge What Christmas could mean to him. Sometimes he fills as many as three engagements a day in the weeks before Christmas, traveling to| all nart sof North Caroline, and many times going to New York or other cities, Lonesome in Dakota It all hegan| 31 years ago. Mr. Koch was then a young professor of English at the University of North Dakota. Just out of Harvard, and far from his Kentucky home at the holiday season, he ruminated one evening in his| study, as a Dakota snowstorm raged outside, on the spirit of Christmas and how| it might be spread. He chose the “Christmas Carol” as the medium which he felt best expressed his thoughts, and on that Christmas eve he read it before a fireside to a small group of friends he had invited for the evening, emulating Dickens himself, who frequently read the “Carol” aloud to audiences. : A year later, those who had heard him had! spread the word] of his presentation and its appeal so well that a jammed auditorium waited to hear Dr. Koch repeat the

He did, and soon requests began to come from villages and hamlets in nearby parts of North Dakota for the young English professor to come and present the “Christmas Carol” to those who could not be at the university hear it, For the rest of the 12 ypars he remained at North Dakota, his ‘little Christmas adventure cones to grow, and soon he was spending most of his time during the!first three weeks of December each year traveling through the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri. Often he fought his way through blinding Snowstorms to keep appointments he had made to repeat the story of Old Scrooge and Tiny Tim's Christmas. Once he was stranded in a {small, snow-bound Dakota town with an engagement next day at Grand Forks, many miles distant. Sriow plows could not clear the way fdr passenger trains, but railroad men, learning of his mission and that a crowded auditorium would await him next night, hooked a caboose to a freight engine and plowed through to take him to his estination:| Another time he rode 50 miles in subzero weather on a hand-car when trains again were tied up. already had read the Christmas carol at Harvard, his alma mater, and at the Institute of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University in New York. North Carolinians knew of his annual Christmas program, and he was asked to continue it. With more engagements than he can fill in his thirty-first year of reading the “Christmas Carol,” Dr. Koch declares that “I enjoy each one more.” ‘Graying as he nears 60, he remains active. in his dramatic work at the University of North Carolina and as lhead of the Carolinian Playmakers, student dramatic organization. { He is credited! with a large part in Initiation and development of folklore in American drama, and two of, his students, Maxwell Anderson and Paul Green, are leaders in advancing the earthy, plan-folk theme on the American stage.

ROMANCES ARE DULLED

By United Press HONOLULU, Dec. 15.—A story in an Austrian newspaper resulted in a flood of marriage proposals to the 31 men working on Midway Island. The dispatch neglected to mention that most of the men already had wives in Hawaii.
