‘Gentlemen’s ‘Agreement’ Is Said to Have, Been Reached Today,
7
By United Presa : SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 15.—A “gentlemen's agreement,” reached atter 20 hours of continuous conferences, today broke the back of " the strike deadlock which has . gripped West Coast shipping for 46 days.
Representatives of steamship com- |
~ panies and unlicensed seafaring uhion men, tackling the “funda- . mental issues” which brought paral- . ysis to a $75,000,000 industry Oct. 29, removed nearly all barriers to resumption of Pacific shipping in a day and _night-long. conference which lasted to the early hours of this morning. Although there was no official announcement of results, it was learned that a ‘“‘gentlemen’s agreement” was reached on operation of
union hiring halls—major issue in!’
‘the dispute which tied up shipping - irom: Alaska to Mexico, a wage increase of between 15 and 20 per cent and preferential hiring of seamen.) ~The airing hall settlement, it was understood, provided that the unions, while keeping control of the
halls, would agree to furnish em- |—
ployers with: seamen asked for. Unions "involved in the peace . meeting were the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific, the Marine Cooks and - Stewards’ Association, and the Marine Firemen's Association. They represent the majority of the ship- * board employes, “who, with the licensed personnel — telegraphists, engineers, masters, mates and pilots —and longshoremen struck when they failed to reach agreements ~ with shipowners over revision of the 1934 contract awards. Virtually all that remained for a complete settlement, it was believed, was an agreement on the manner in which future disputes would be conciliated. Apparently this question was to be solved by provision for port committees in each port. Each committee would include a representative of the shipowners and the unions.
