11 PERSONS HAD
MILLION-DOLLAR INCOMES IN'35
Eight More in Treasury’s ‘Millionaire Row’ Than Previous Year.
.
By United Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 14—Fortyone persons in the United States reported net incomes of a million dollars or more last year, the Internal " Revenue Bureau revealed today. This was an increase of eight over
the previous year, put nine less than the 1933 tenancy of the “millionaire’s row” column in the Treasury’s tax ledgers. Reflecting the rising prosperity of the last four years, the report showed an increase of 21 over the number reporting in the milliondollar category in 1932, the low point of the depression. However, in 1929, when the boom was at its height, 513 persons reported in this classification. . The 41 million-a-year men paid taxes of $41,499,000 or almost as much as the total received from 3,992,627 persons with meonies up to $5000. The millionaires reported et income of $73,630,000, an average of £1,795,853 each, whereas those in the $5000 and under group reported net earnings of $8,714,063,000, an average of $2182.
502 of All Income
Broken down into percentages, those in the million-dollar income class represented only .502 ofall net income reported, yet paid 6.344 per
cent of all income taxes, while those in the $5000 and under classification represented 59.457 of the total net income and paid 6.843 per cent of the taxes. Of the 41 taxpayers in the million dollars and up class, 29 reported net incomes of hetween $1,000,0 and $1,500,000 each; eight ces of $1,500,000 to $2,000,000, two incomes of - $2,000,000 to $3,000,000; A seven incomes of $3,000,000 to $4,000,000, and one with an income of between $4,000,000 and $5,000,000. Treasury officials declined to reveal whether there were any Rocke~fellers, Fords, Mellons or others of the nation’s wealthiest among those having net incomes of a million upward in 1935. The Internal Revenue Bureau's report, based on income tax returns to Aug. 31 this year, showed that - 4,473,426 persons filed returns. Less than half of those filing were taxable. $14,656,079,421
Aggregate net income was $14,656,079421, an increase of $2,199,816,930 or 17.7 per cent over the previous year and the highest since 1930. The number of individuals reporting was the greatest since 1924. They paid income taxes of $654,116,061, an increase of $147,634,938 or 29.1 per cent over the previous year and exceeding any year since 1929 when $1,001,938,000 was Sontribuied to the Treasury's cofers. Heaviest share of the tax burden was carried by the 7878 persons in the $50,000 to $100,000 income class. They paid $110,557,000. Next heaviest load was borne by the 25,623 in the $25,000 to $50,000 column, who paid $105,728,000. There" were 109 persons reporting incomes of between $500,000 and $1,000,000, outnumbering this group in 1934 by 23. They had net income of $73,811,000 and paid $38,323,000 in taxes. ° The average rate of tax paid on het incomes in the classes between $1,000,000 and $5,000,000 ranged between 55.33 and 58.02 per cent.
