ndiana’s Publicity Office Says Coach Dean Has Cause for * Worry Over Team; Not Wishing to Be Rude, Writer Begs to Differ.

rl HEN the census was taken of all those who were convinced that Indiana University was ready fo coast through to an undefeated season, after that 46-13 defeat of

Cincinnati last Saturday, one who was not among the group,

‘was Everett Dean, the I. U. coach. Mr, Dean, instead, was glum about the victory. He was

‘worried. He appreciated winning, of course.

But after

.all, there were so many mistakes which the boys made that it was no time to clap hands, he said, in effect in discussing Indiana’s chances against Miami tomorrow night. (Reactions of Mr. Dean were obtained through the courtesy of Indiana University publicity office.) ! It is a pretty generally accepted fact that if all the college coaches were as downcast as they are written up to be, by their publicity offices, every one of them would be single, live in a garret and be on the very verge of ending it all.

fhe main reason why ‘Mr. Dean should have no doubts about his players’ talents, is that seven out of last year’s 10 varsity men are back in uniform this season. Two "of those who graduated were Lester Stout, forward, and

Wendell Walker, guard, last

year’s co-captains.

But Mr. Dean has several boys who can wear the gradu- . ates’ shoes—and make no doubt of it, they will. And besides that he has a group of likely sophomores who will matriculate into competition this season.

Going more deeply into

this. question of Mr. Dean’s

lack of cause for worry, let me present: Kenneth Gunning—Forward. Three-letter man.. In sophomore year won basketball and baseball letters. Star

dash man.

Finished third in Conference scoring last year with 122 points. Exceptional dribbler and passer.

ERNON HUFFMAN—Guard. Probably will have his

. bust in Union Building soon.

Unanimous choice for All-

Conference guard last year. Also picked All-America guard. Big, fast—and smart. Scored 95 points last year.

. Robert Etnire--Forward.

Crack shot. Has unusual

ability in getting the ball down under the right basket.

Scored 48 points last season. Fred Fechtman—Center.

Will be ineligible after Jan-

uary. Is 6 feet 7. Spends lots of time under his own basket

and usually gets the ball.

under opponents’ baskets, too. (He scored

year.) Joe Platt—Guaxd.

Ranked as best sharpshooter on the | squad. Why not? Had a field goal batting average of .460 | cM (Lou Gehrig please note) for last year.

HATS the five that started against Cincinnati last week. What really makes it hard for Mr. Dean is that he has them almost three deep at Indiana. Jim Birr, for instance, the Indianapolis boy who looked good at end a couple of times during the football season, is the only member of the basketball squad who can boast of having played last year

without having a single foul _" shoot, too. -

called on him. Yes, he ‘can

And 1 can’t imagine anything more ercouraging than having a guard candidate whose first name is Raymond and

last is—Guard.

So what if Miami does have a good little team? And what if Kansas State, which Indiana plays Monday night, is rated the best in its history? After all I've pointed out, Mr. Dean shouldn’t have any trouble getting to sleep these nights.

_ And probably doesn’t.
