Rites Arranged. for Woman Known as ‘Queen of Agriculture.’

By Unites Press LAFAYETTE, Ind, Dec. 11.—Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs. Virginia Claypool Meredith, only woman trustee of Purdue Unia and affectionately known as queen of American agricul- —. who died yesterday after a ghree months’ illness. She was 88. Mrs. Meredith gained prominence 8 pioneer in home economics and lectured throughout the nation. Her career as a farm manager

began in 1882 with the death of her.

From her farm near Cambridge Oity, Mrs. Meredith sent champion‘ship Shorthorn cattle and Shrop- . shire sheep to expositions. - In 1889 she became the first wom8n to lecture on crop and livestock =production, and in recognition* she Was appointed Indiana representative on the board of managers of the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1892. She ofganized the department of e economics at the University of Minnesota in 1908, remaining there five years before returning to her farm. She was the founder of the Indiana Federation of Clubs and was its honorary president.

PROGRESS SEEN FOR CHINA BY EDUCATOR

China is about to enter a period of progress, Dr. Y. G. Chen, Univer8ity of Nanking president, told the International Goodwill Committee of the Indianapolis Church Federation in the Y. M. C. A. yesterday. “Progressiveness is gathering momentum in China despite national disorders,” he said. “The standardiZation of currency throughout China has done much to instill a spirit © of unity.”

“Line up early and avoid the rush” was the motto of this group of car owners. They were among the first to obtain 1937 automobile and drivers’ licenses at the Statehouse when they went on sdle yesterday.

FOUNDERS’ DAY SET BY MUSIC SORORITY

Founders’ Day is to be observed tomorrow by Eta Chapter, Phi Sig-

ma Nu, public school music sorority, with a banquet at 8 p. m. in the Lincoln Hotel. Miss Bicking, Arthur Jordan Conserva director, is to speak. Miss Mary Ellen Eubank is to preside. Initiation exercises are to be conducted ‘in the conservatory at 6:30 p. m. for Miss Sylvia Watson, Hollandsburg, and Miss Emma Galvin, Frankfort. - ;
