Y. Arena
sol. John Kilpatrick Plans Gala Winter Sports - Carnival.
BY JOE WILLIAMS Times Special Writer
NEW YORK, Dec, 10.—I dropped
into Madison Square Garden late yesterday afternoon and witnessed some very strange goings on. They were strange even for Madison Square Garden where one is liable
witness anything, including, at
rare intervals, an honest wrestling
match.
Crossing over from Jack Demp-
sey’'s place in the lowering haze of a murmurous twilight I found myself suddenly in the midst of arctic splendors. A thick carpet of snow covered the arena floor. On either side were square
Williams icy flats upon which men and
women skaters pirouetted and executed quick, graceful turns. From . the towering eaves of the building a i “long ski jump rolled down to the ‘ floor like the frozen tongue of a Norseland giant.
The Garden has been converted
into many things. Overnight it has been changed from a prize fight ~ locale to a wild west rodeo with Jong, lean men from the wide open spaces bulldogging steers; it has been changed to the swanky atmosphere of silky show horses with the Whitneys and the Gimbels striving for blue ribbons; it has been changed to the garish dress of the big top with heart stopping ac‘robatics and the broad buffooneries of painted clowns. “But this is the first time the house that Rickard built has ever been made over into something that looks like a cross between Lake Placid and Bear Mountain in mid winter. It is of course the first time .anybody around here ever attempted to recreate snow covered mountain slides and all the atmospheric touches that go with them indoors,
Good Indoor Setup Only the building limitations of
the Garden prevents an accurate replica of the more famous ski Jumps of the Olympic experts. The one that was just being sprayed with snow when I arrived yesterday -is a sizable miniature of the real thing, rising some 90 feet to the ceiling and making possible takeoffs of 65 and 70 feet. This is admittedly skimpy compared to the recorded 300-foot jumps of the Olympic experts but it is better than . fair for an indoor setup. I stood alongside Col John Kilpatrick, the eld Yale end, who runs the Garden, as workmen were .putting on the . final tauches for the opening show. “It’s already a sell out” commented - the colonel whose interest in sports, d fear, is shamelessly commercial.
Large cakes of ice werg being
hoisted to the top of the ski scaffold by means of a pulley. The ice cakes . were then placed in a machine ~ which proceeded to grind them into # white feathery substance. A hoselike arrangement was attached to the machine and in a few seconds workmen were powdering the white . pine boards with man-made snow. “The spectacle of snow spurting out of the end of a hose was in itself a reasonably unique thing to ~ see, and you can take the colonel’s word for it that this snow is every ~ pit as good as the poetic kind that falls so silently and softly from the heavens above.
¢ Superior Grade Snow “As a matter of fact,” said the
Colonel, “it probably is a superior grade: At least it costs more, very |, one of those cakes of ice costs us a dollar and we’ll probably need a thousand or more to get as much as we need.”
Mr. Dennis Scanlan who imports
"most of the European skaters for the amateur carnivals came along . and observed that the growing ' popularity of winter sports was cutting into the trade of the tropical resorts. “You'd be surprised how many peopie who used to go to Florida and California for the sun are now coming to the mountains for the snow. And it should be understandable. The sun is enerwating. The snow is invigorating. The net result is much better health.”
To me this betrayed Mr. Scan-
‘Jan's ignorance. I have been gbing
e grim interests of experting and
fr for the very old people who Sit on the green benches in the sunghine I haven't met anybody who went there for his health. It has been my observation and experience “that Florida is the very last place $0 go for renewed vitality. The
is too swift.

HE Williamson National Rating System today presents the ratings of | 614 college and university football teams and of the 72 conferences and groups in which these elevens pesfonneq during: the 1936
At the head of each group is presented the name of the conference, the listing number (at left), and the average rating of the league (at right). At the left of each team is given the national listing number while on the right is the Williamson rating of the eleven. The rating of the System’s perfect team is 100. Conference rating | is the sum of the team ratings divided by the number of colleges in the group. Team'ratings are based on the complete schedule, both in and out of the conference or group. The Williamson system takes into account the strength of opponents, hardness of the schedule, consistency, and scoring. Hence the head team of each group may not always have the best win, loss, and tie record on all games. SI 2 =z HE 614 teams rated finished the 1936 season with complete records. Of more than 2600 games collectively engaged in by these teams,
over 95 per cent were won by the higher rated eleven in each instance or were ties between teams respectively differing by not over five points in
The Big Ten conference is listed third with a rating of 83.3. Indiana "Group No, 1 is listed twenty-fourth with a rating of 52.8. It includes Butler, Wabash, Manchester and De Pauw. listed ‘sixty- third with a rating of 27.8 and includes Indiana’ State, Valparaiso, St. Joseph's, Evansville, Ball State, Franklin, Danville, Hanover, Earlham, Rose Poly, Oakland City.
