BY MARIAN YOUNG ' NEA Service Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Dec. 4—A doting aunt wanted to give her nephew.in Connecticut some Texas horned toads. A Chicago bride-to-be needed orange blossoms from Florida. A Rochester (Minn.) ‘ woman had to have, on a few hours’ notice, a New York evening gown. ; Mildred Johnson, whose job is taking care of just such demands, supplied them, every one. Since she started -her “air shopping service,” Mildred Johnson has learned much ‘about the lengths people will go to obtain rare food, flowers, clothes and table decorations in a hurry. :

Aided by Airport Workers

:The idea of the unique service came to Miss Johnson while she was waiting af an airport in Berlin a few years ago. She had-lost her seat to an express package and there was nothing to do except. wait for another plane, look ‘at the ceiling and think. ‘She got thinking about the buse that Europeans make of air express and, as the hours passed, the thoughts grew to plans. Back in America -the plans ‘became the air shopping service. . “I depend on airport employes all over the country to help me] fill my orders,” Miss Johnson explained. “The customer has only to telephone his request to the local railway express agent who gets in touch with me. I telegraph one of my co-workers at an. airport nearest the place where the desired item is grown or manufactured, and he does the rest. And they seldom are stumped! “So far, the strangest request has been for stork eggs. The Stork Club wanted them—and wanted them in & hurry. They also put in an order for alligator eggs—the storks. and alligators haven't co-operated properly so the orders haven't been filled,” Mildred finished, laughingly.

Other Difficult Orders Are Easy The attractive, dark-haired woman went on to tell about other re-

It seems that Midwestern hostesses take great delight in serving stone crabs, fresh from Florida, or. lobster, flown from the coast of Maine. - New York debutantes have & penchant for New Orleans’ orchids, and their fathers like to order a certain shrimp appetizer from a famous restaurant in thé same city. Jane Cowl Relates Her Yule Plans

Actress Tries To Imitate Christmases of Girlhood.

.

BY BEATRICE BURGAN Society Editor

Joe COWL tries to make Chgist= mas resemble “the holidays she enjoyed as a girl on Beacon Hill in Boston. She doesn’t let a road trip deprive her of all the well remems= bered joys. > If she could have her dreams realized, she'd spend Christmas eve in Boston with candles blazing. all over the house, and the door open wide to all her friends. But this Christmas she is to be in Chicago playing in “First Lady.” So she will have her celebration back stage. .Shelll order the lights dimmed and candles lighted. Her gifts for the cast will be wrapped and concealed in a grab bag and her fellow actors will draw on ribe bons to pull them out. Then the feast will be served.

Shopping Completed

Miss Cowl has her shopping come pleted. She buys the gifts which she thinks will please the individe ual, and which she herself likes. She had a late luncheon yestere day when she arrived in town for her appearances at English’s last night, tonight and tomorrow. Her large brown eyes glowed bee neath a bright green antelope hat, which dipped down in front and had a pheasant feather waving high in the air. Her eyes are sO €Xe pressive that you wished the hat had darted back off her face, sO you wouldn’t miss a glimpse of their sparkle. Her shoulders were broads ened by a tweed coat, with large Her black crinkled crepe dress was buttoned high to the neck, and a gold pin held its 3 scarf in place. i She described her summer with ‘amusement. She was “drowned out” of ‘her favorite English vacation spot by continuous downpours, SO she traveled on to Austria. ‘Had ‘Language Trouble Her bed light went out one night, She knew only enough German to make her simplest wants Wi. She thumbed through the dictionary, but couldn’t find the right words., She finaily said, “The Licht by the Bett—pfft!” The Herr under= stood. The light was repaired. Miss Cowl’s after-theater supper parties are famous in New York, She has a collection of favorite rec= ipes, which pleases the palates of her guests. When she promises shrimp. souffles, her guests rush to be there. Since she’s given up her two houses, her parties are infrequent, But she scrutinizes the menus caree fully, when she's on the road, in

search of her favorite dishes.
