Of Drive for ‘Subsidization
Reynolds’ Scheme to Be Submitted to Conference Officials.
BY STEVE SNIDER United Press Staff Correspondent CAGO, Dec. 3~The University of Wisconsin .today prepared a plea to the Big Ten to recognize its bold plan for helping athletes in the midst of the loudest clamor for open subsidization in W tern Conference history. With the so-called Reynolds plan up for approval by conference faculty representatives tomorrow, Wisconsin hoped to drive the first wedge in the campaign to promote free discussion of “college professionalism.” There is little chance the Big Ten will sanction the idealistic plan outlined by Robert L. Reynolds, youthful professor of Medieval History. It calls for an alumni-financed summer institute at which selected students will be graded in studies and athletics and awarded scholarships on the basis of these results. This defies a conference rule prohibiting athletic scholarships.
- Oppose Training Table An unofficial United Press poll revealed that several schools planned to oppose even the training table, a far milder aid to athletes than the Reynolds plan. The training table has been voted down before. Reynolds’ argument, however, may _ bring to a head the proselyting pugaboo usually approached in whispered sessions. Back of him stands the University of Wisconsin faculty which approved his plan although with. “moderation and considerahle misgivings.”
Remain in Background
Wisconsin’s athletic director, Harry Stuhldreher, and his aids were expected to remain in the background, since the plan is original with Reynolds. At least two other Big, Ten campuses have become battlegrounds over the training table and modified subsidization. The Michigan student daily criticised the Big Ten for not permitting training tables, while the Daily Maroon of the University of Chicago attacked the Reynolds plan and later carried an interview with players demanding that Chicago “turn professional or 48 tHe! ot the conference.”

But Terry, a shrewd trader who got the best of Branch Rickey last year in the Roy Parmalee-Burgess Whitehead deal, is ‘expected to make Rickey come down to earth if he really wants to trade Dean. The Giants definitely want Dean to regain favor with New York fans as a result of their

Yankees in the World Series. Lieber Is Wanted
Three clubs are seeking Outflelder Hank Lieber. Cincinnati seems to have the inside track for the Big Giant patrolman, with Brooklyn and the Cubs also in the bidding. Comiskey, who arrived last night, is in a position to swing deals for the up and coming Chicago White Sox for the first time in 16 years. The White Sox need a third baseman and will bid heavily for Pinky Higgins 'of the Athletics. Quifielder Rip Radcliff is one of the players who will be offered to Connie Mack for Higgins. Another deal the Sox have on tap is Pitcher Johnny Whitehead to Detroit for Pitcher Jake Wade and Outfielder Chet Laabs, last year with: Milwaukee. A couple: of the right kind of deals might make the White Sox a serious pennant con-

Although officials say that there is nothing in the convention agenda which would admit a rehash of ghe Olympic participation debate, some of ‘them, Mahoney included, admit that somebody might sound “off, getting the battle under-way.
Delicate Situation
Such a battle might start from a mention of ‘the firing of S. Jarrett.because she drank more champagne ‘than the team officials believed proper while en route to Berlin... It: might come from questioning the case -of triple-champion Jesse Jones, barred from amateur competition after he refused to go on an European barn-storming trip arranged at his request. Although he may be on the receiving end of verbal slaps, Brundage should have a neat position. He has indicated he is not a candidate for re-election, and he holds a membership in the International Olympic Committee, a greater sports honor than any of Bis friends or foes. can boast.
