WPA JOB JOB OUTS
Eleven Cities Band Band Together For Showdown Against Hopkins’ Order.
By United Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 3.—Mayors of 11 major industrial cities banded together today for a showdown protest to the Works Progress Administration against its order that jobs under the 3,500,000-person work-re-lief program be cut drastically by Jan. 1, Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia of New York City, where WPA workers fought police in a riot over impending dismissals, lead in the unprecedented action. Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Newark, Cleveland, Louisville, Baltimore, St. Paul and Milwaukee sent representatives to back La Guardia’s demand that the Administration continue its heavy unemployment aid expenditures during the coming winter months. Hopkins, now on a Southern inspection tour, recently directed that 425,000 unemployed be cut from Federal work rolls by Jan. 1. These workers are scheduled to g0 oft WPA before the new year starts: 1. Two hundred fifty - thousand - drought victims, transferred from WPA to resettlement administration care, 2. One hundred fifty thousand regular program workers, discharged through an investigation of relief needs. 3. Twenty thousand nonrelief employes who are project supervisors and foremen not drawn from relief rolls. 4. Five thousand stenographers and clerical workers, another group of nonrelief workers who have been attached to WPA’s 34934-person administrative staff.
Mayor Kern Will Not Attend WPA Parley
Mayor Kern today said he does in the Washington meeting sponsored by the United States Conference of Mayors to discuss reductions in WPA personnel.

LOCAL MAN CHARGED WITH UNFAIR PRICES

McPheeters, trading as Mid-West
Soap Co. and as Savon Products, 901 - High-st, - Indianapolis, was charged by the Federal Trade Commission today with “misrepresentation of the prices of toilet soap sold in interstate commerce.”
The complaint alleges “that prices marked on boxes of soap sold by the respondent were many times in ‘excess of the actual value and less than the prices. charged by house-to-house canvassers of the product. “These practices tended unfairly to divert trade to the respondent from other competing persons and companies - who truthfully advertised their products, and tended to deceive buyers, in violation of the Federal Trade Commission Act,” the complaint charges. Twenty days were allowed to answer the complaint.
