Widening of Traffic Hazards |
- Would Cost $25,000,000, Adams Estimates.
One of the most perplexing‘high-
way problems now facing: Indians is the presence of more than 2000 bridges and culverts that are too | narrow for trafic requirements, James D. ® Adams, highway come
‘| mission secretary, said today.
In the last four years, hE said, Spproxiiately. 3000 of these have been widened. To.widen the ree mainder, which have roadway ob ances of 20 feet or less, would ree quire an expenditure of between 25 and 30 million dollars, he said. ~ “The present generation enjoys a fine inheritance of highways which have been improved until they rather adequately serve the motor< ing public,” Adams said “Bridges and EL also a part of this inheritance, are however, frequently inadequate.
Claim Many Lives “More than 1900 of them on the 9000-mile state highway system, have a clearance ranging from 20
down to 11 feet. These narrow structures claim many lives ane nually and some of the most tragic . accidents occur at these points. The public insists that they be widened but we face an almost prohibitive replacement cost.” The Highway Commission exe pects to continue its present pro gram of widening as many of the narrow bridgés and culverts: each year as available funds will permit, Mr. Adams added, but until the program can be completed, motor= ists must heed the warning signs Plated on ejther side of these strucures The ‘widening of narrow bridges and culverts on the staté highway system has been a part of the shouldering widening program initiated in 1933 as a safety and work relief measure. To date the right-of-ways have been widened on 1800 miles of state highways. ‘
