130 Small Units Eliminated by Consolidation in Past Year.

A steady reduction since 1915 has _left* only 1363 one-room schools in ~ Indiana, Floyd IL Murray, State . Buperintendent of Instruction, said today. There were approximately 6000! such schools in Indiana when the consolidation movement first started, Mr. McMurray explained. The movement has been accelerated by the introduction of motor buses, improved highways and increased interest in better educational facilities, he said. E “During the current year 138 one-room schools have been closed and none re-opened in the state,” Mr. McMurray declared. “This ~ perhaps is: 4 record in the consolidation movement.”

The movement also has affected two-teacher schools and the number has been decreased from 8000 to 3468. When the number of one-room schools has been reduced below . 1000, the closing of such schools probably will proceed more slowly because there are many places in Indiana where this type of school will be the only means of providing educational facilities, according to Mr. McMurray.
