~ Supply Funds, Flynn Says.

YORK, Nov. 20. — The

‘that we ought to curb foreign in-

in this country. We are apt to remember that . American railroads, power systems and utilities, as well as some’ industries, were very widely aided by foreign investment in the | : eazy d ays. | : When the Grea = Me. Fryon ‘War oa m Great Britain alone owned abou _ $3,500,000,000 of American ar ments. Germany ranked next. Holdand was next and France next. These countries alone held about six billion dollars of our paper. But, with the coming of the war, these vast holdings were dumped on our market, and when the war was over they were so enormously reduced that they became negli-

{gba " » ”

OWEVER, in the last decade - they have inereased again, particularly in the last two or three years. For the last year and a half; save for a brief interval, the amount of foreign holdings of American investments, particularly security investments, has been mounting rapidly. At the end of last year the total _of foreign holdings ‘was over five billion. And since that time they ‘have risen perhaps another’ $800,000,0C0. Of course, all of this is-not-in stocks or even stocks and bonds. A fair guess would be that at least $3,500,000,000 is in securities, ~ while the balance is in investments of all sorts—property ownership, ‘ partnership ownerships, mortgage notes, etc. It has been several times published that foreign “investments here are at least seyen billion dollars. But short time paper must * ~ be included to get this total.

sn # s

HE actual total of long-term investments is about $5,800,000,000 now-or neéarly at the 1914 | mark. And the security total,” which is what the President is troubled about, is, as stated, about $3,500,000,000. This has been due to several circumstances. First of all, there has peen a sheer flight from European ~ currencies because of war rumors, and even rumors of possible inflation abroad. But also a great deal of foreign money has come here ause investment or rather specglation has Seemed sounder and more promising here than at home. * As usual Britain has ‘been the Jargest investor. As .a matter of fact ‘Britain, Canada, Switzerland, France and Holland hold about 75 per cent of these investments; about 12 per cent is held in various other European countries and the balance is pretty well scattered around the world. Of course there is a certain advantage in foreign investment. It brings fresh funds into the home market. But there are also certain grave dangers in it. These wé can consider later. IPRICE ADVANCE

PREDICTED FOR FARM PRODUCE

Agricultural Bureau Sees 4 Increase Within Next Few Months.

Times Special WASHINGTON, Nov. 20.—Further

agvances in prices of cattle, lambs,

months were predicted by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics in its monthly summary of the farm price situation, During the * period Yrom midOctober to mid-November, prices of corn, cattle, lambs, potatoes and

‘| eggs advanced slightly to offset the

small declines recorded in wheat, poultry, butter and cheese.

Domestic wheat prices have declined gradually since the middle of October, largely as a result of improved prospects for wheat in the

offerings of new Argentine wheat for deferred shipment, the report said. :

Lamb Supply Large

Prices of better grade slaughter cattle are expected to rise during the winter and to average as high or higher than in the corresponding period a year.ago, the report said. Slaughter supply of lambs during | the next three’ months is expected to continue rather large and to exceed the same period last year, but during the last ee months, Feb- jar ruary to April, oft the current marketing year they may be considerably smaller than 1936, according to the bureau. Butter and cheese prices, contrary to the usual seasonal ‘trend,

However, with lower production and higher consumer buying power in prospect, the outlook is for substantially raised prices during the winter months. Although slightly improved, the potato crop in the late states during the last month still is smaller than in recent years.
