LICENSES IS ON
perstitious Motorists Ask for Telephone Numbers, . Bowling Scores, etc.
1937 auto license plates was under ‘Way in Indiana today as superstilous motorists: continued to file reQuests for numbers corresponding With thelr homes, telephone num-
Requests are made by mail, teleand personal visits for numcombinations from 1 to 1313. The decision as to who is to get the favored numbers requires all the © tact and diplomacy of a Talleyrand,
to Mark Rodenbeck, as--
a sistant state vehicle license director, There is no one .so injured and t as a motorist who finds that instead of getting 7777 he is assigned a prosaic combination, Mr. Rodenbeck said. | Ah! Those Politicians
One of ‘the most delicate tasks is spreading the low and star licenses around to politicians and their friends. If the Hoboken mayor discovers the mayor of Sawville, across the creek, has a lower number, the telephone wires to Indianapolis bum with heated words, The 1937 colors are gold and
black, the Purdue University colors. |.
Mr. Rodenbeck received a request from a Purdue [Slump recently asking for her Members of the Falls City bowling team of Indianapolis, winners of the American Bowling Con‘gress tournament, would like to have their high bowling scores on their license plates. Some individuals ask to have their house, telephone and license numbers the same, and an armored car service requested numbers. corresponding to rifle calibers.
A former World War -ace, who |.
miraculously escaped from his flaming airplane, has asked for number seven, the number of his plane. Expects-15,000 Requests
- Numbers 1 to 1000 usually go to officials and friends of the state administration. The next bracket, 1000 to 5000, gets a heavy play from motorists who would like to be con‘spicuous with low numbers, | Some rash souls have even re- . quested numbers one and two in the mistaken belief that first come first served. Mr. Rodenbeck estimates that 15,000 motorists will demand special numbers. boo “The business is getting bigger every year,” Mr. Rodenbeeck | sal regretfully, “Special numbers is just a service, and we can’t hire addir tional help for it. We have to work at night sorting out the requests and assigning licenses.”
Mr. Rodenbeck is thankful that |
Indiana does not follow the Ohio system of having both letters and numbers on the licenses. , | “When you start,” he said, “you get deluged with requests for letters corresponding to initials.” In Indiana the Governor | gets license number one, but in Illinois that plate is held by the man who set up the license department several years ago. An Illinois motorist can hold the same license number year after year simply by applying for it annually. The special numbers’ list probably _ will be announced Dec. 10 when the Neches go on sale, Mr. Rodenbeck

Alvin Hughes, 14, (eft) was back in Technical High School today, saddened .by misfortune which befell his brother, Herbert, : 12, who is in City Hospital for treatment of bad burns. The accident was partly his fault, Alvin thought, because he had |. left home and caused his mother, Mrs. Bethel Cade, 524 E. New York-st, to come after him in New Albany yesterday. Because the boys’ stepfather, Mack Cadé, was ill and unable to fire the . furnace, Herbert had stayed home from school. The boy was burned when he poured naptha on the fire, Mr, Cade was slightly burned about the hands while extinguishing flames which enveloped his stepson’s ‘clothing.
