last evening before a capacity house. For the opening performance, the San Carlo singers
: presented Puccini’s “La Boheme.” This appealing story of the
unhappy love of Mimi and Rodolfo is something of a depart- |" ure from the traditional “curtain raiser.” It is an opera, how-
ever, which is suited admirably to the intimate atmosphere and ‘not too ample stage of the theater in which it was played. Lacks Pageantry - “La Boheme” is not a notorious-
. ly popular item in any opera com-
pany’s repertoire. It is deficient in the pageantry, color and rousing concerted numbers that bring the ‘public clamoring to the box office. Yet it is warmly melodious, wellconstructed music which tells its story with sincerity, directness and admirable restraint. Undoubtedly Puccini’s masterpiece, it was given a competent if not very poignant delivery last night.
As Rodolfo, Dimitri @nofrei arried off the vocal honors. His is a tenor of clarity, range and power, which afforded his audience frequent examples of beautiful singing. His part of the famous duet with Mimi in Act I ‘and the duet with Marcello at the beginning of the final act are remembered especially.
Others Perform Well
. Bianca Saroya was the Mimi—a rather robust looking Mimi apparently cut down by the Grim Reaper in the full bloom of her youth. Her voice, though marred by a breathy
quality, was ample and satisfying.
In other roles Mario Valle as “Marcello and Stefan Kozdkevich as Shaunard sang admirably. Santa Biondo was heard as Musetta; Harold Kravitt as Colline, and Natale
‘Friendly’ Journey

Powell said, failing to finish the sentence. “Aloof” and “snooty” were suggested, but the dancer said: “Oh, no. She just remained - in her drawing room.” Miss Powell posed willingly for pictures, but Miss Sydney rushed out of the station as ~ soon as her haggage was ate tended to.

Cervi sang Benoit and Alcindoro. Carlo Peroni was the conductor. The difficulty of “La Boheme” is the burden which, through its lack of action, it throws upon the singers’ dramatic powers. And as drama, last night's performance failed to measure up.to a musical standard which was creditably high.
