Negro Educator Stresses Function of Religion in Government.

Success of present Federal government experiments will be more significant than the results of the Russian revolution or the control of Germany by the Nazi, according to Dr. Mordecai Johnson, Howard Uni-

versity president. The function of religion in government will determine largely. the degree of success achieved, Dr. Johnson said, He spoke yesterday at a meeting in the Y. M. C. A, colored branch. “While there exists a greater chance of failure than in any similar experiments, #® can bring about immediately what Russia and Germany view only for the future,” the . Negro educator said. “Relief has become the focal point

of attention at a time when more |

power and promise exists in ihe state than ever before,” he continued. “Mr. Roosevelt's problem is essentially a moral and religious one.

“Private Relief Not Possible”

“The significance lies in the fact that Mr. Roosevelt is bringing about

a revolutionary change without lay- |

ing hands on the functions of the church or state. Relief will absorb the essence of religion, leaving the spirit of the church intact. “The free church in this country, as opposed to a state .church in Europe, is brought about through political intent. The free church is a profoundly religious achievement which sets the stage for development of religious consciousness never known before.” Private care of indigents is no jonger possible, Dr. Johnson said. Confidence in the idea that private business will mend itself if allowed to go its own way has been lost, he claimed

Religion Balancing Power

“As the body of relief becomes larger, the power of private economic structure becomes paralyzed,” he said. “The state emerges as the leading power of the modern world. Relief must be a deliberate planned function of this state.”

Religion will be the balancing

power in government, he continued, and failure of the experiments would end in either labor or capital definitely in power. The present crucial situation is a decisive result of the last election, Dr. Johnson said. Focus of attention on relief has brought the state from a secondary to a primary position in our economic life. President of the Negro university in Washington, D. C. since 1926, Dr. Johnson is regarded as one of America’s foremost educators and jeaders.
