tremely flexible in 1936 and able to out-perform far lighter cars that place main: emphasis on accelera~ tion, operating standards are éven higher. ‘At the same time the economy, comfort and safety. of the models have been improved. : A digest of the 1937 Cadillac features follows: Appearance—A massive, yet wellformed, h o ° a dominates the design. Fenders, E. BR. Lindsmith tapering and drawn to a modulated “V” at the rear, add to the impression of fleetness and grace. Skirts of the rear, fenders are longer. Smoothness of lines blend tastefully into the rear-end sweep. Bumpers are more rugged. Comfort—Primarily as an aid ‘to smoother; quieter motors, ‘are a lighter flywheel, a three-point engine support, improved hydraulic valve silencers, as well as reduced engine speed. Adoption of the hypoid rear axle on the “60” permits considerable increase in passenger room and reduces unsprung weight, a prime factor in roadability. Inside the Cadillacs, the addition of leg and head room, together with the soft luxury of the all-wool upholstery, is striking, Changes in the relative rates of the front and rear springs and shock absorber action are responsible for an easier

ride at high speed. “Knee action” units are retained at the front, with dashpot inertia rear shock absorbers on the “65,” “70,” “75” and “85.” Waxed liners, squeak-proofing the leaves without the necessity for lubrication, are applied to the rear springs of the “60.” *Decreased harshness in the stabilizers’ further assist general riding comfort.

Probably _ the" most pronounced change in body styles since cars gave way to sedans al twenty years ago has been the trend of the last two years toward the touring sedan, C. P. (Tex) Simpson, vice president and general sales

today. “If the popularity of this type with its spacious built-in trunk con tinues to increase at the present rate it will be only a matter of ans other year or two until the straight sedan will be almost a thing of the past,” he explained. ; “As short a time ago as January, 1035, the straight type four-door sedan accounted for the largest per centage of the Pontiac eight-cyline der body styles, with less than onee third as many touring sedans. Thirty-five per cent were straight type four-door sedans and only 10 per cent touring sedans. “By the end of August, 1036, the straight type four-door sedan had dropped to a bare 7.8 per cent while four-door touring sedan had
