Dean F. D. Kershner Lauds ‘Christianity in America.’

BY FREDERICK D. KERSHNER Dean of “College of Religion, Butler iversity One of the outstanding books of the year in the theological field appeared a short time ago from the Abingdon Press, under the title “Christianity in America.” The author is Dr. E. G. Homrighausen, pastor of the Carrollton Avenue Reformed Church in this city and for the past three years a lecturer in the : department of i church history : of the Butler : University - College of Religion Competent critics are agreed : that Dr. ‘Homrighausen's work may well furnish a starting point for the development of a real and vital school of American thee ology. Thete is much need for systematic thinking in this field, and there has been entirely too little of it. As thé author of this work re< marks, in spite of its progress in other directions, America has prosuced only ore world-récognized theologian, Jonathan Edwards. Bdwards, it also will be recalled, dates back to the eighteenth century.

he makes the fur fly in a good many different directions. The flabbinéss, shallowness, materialism and petti= ness of current religious thinking, are portrayed in colors of stark reality. - Here there is, of course, no little resémblance to Karl Barth and the crisis school of theology in Gere many with which the author is so

THE CHRISTIAN WARFARE

Devotional Redding: II Corinthians 1:3-11

BY WM. E. GILROY, D: D. International Uniform Sunday School Lesson for Nov. 8, HE plan of our lessons has asso--ciated ‘the historical reference ‘0 {Paul's visits to different cities, as

recorded in thé Books of Acts, with assages in Paul's letters to churches [that were directéd to the Christians in each particular city. : Here we have a striking passage i concerning Paul's work as a preach - er in- Ephesus, and along with it ‘the great exhortation to Christian ‘warfare which Paul addressed to the \Ephssians in the sixth chapter of iis Epistle. ‘Ephesus was a city of gréat commercial - importance but its distinetion ‘wis not confined to its commerce and wealth. : The Temple of Diana in Ephesus ‘was listed among thé seven wonders ‘of the world, so that it was not without wafrant that in their uproar against Paul, the people cried,

“{“@Greéat is Diana of the Ephesians.”

-3t will be recalled that the silver- ‘| &hiths, who made shrines for the Temnple of Diana, were much concerned ovér the success of Paul's attack on idolatry, because they believed that their craft was in danger. It would have moved people greatly if thé smiths had said, “We are in danger of losing trade.” I many others who have traded ofit‘ably in religion they sought fo stir

One's faith in human nature is strengthened, too, by the facet that everywhere that Paul went were those who met his challenge and appeal. . But one must not assume that the way of the new converts was edsy, ‘of that they could achieve Christian life and character without peril and
