AUTOMOTIVE NEWS HIGHLIGHT

1937 MACHINES | 0 INTRODUCE 2 DEVELOPMENTS

‘Hypoid’ Axle and Gasoline Volatility Selector Are New Features.

Introduction of the 1937 auto- | mobile models heralds the coming | of two inconspicuous but important | developments—the gasoline volatil- | ity selector and the “hypoid” axle. | While installed on many of the new models, the volatility selector is | not standard equipment, on all of | them. Nevertheless, its makers predict it is destined to play an important part in future design trends. The use of hypoid and high tooth pressure axles, however, now has me general. During the last few years the pe- | troleum industry has made steady advances in the art of adjusting fuel volatility to seasonal changes in requirements. For hot weather service highly stable fuels are now provided while for winter use products permitiing easy starting and mini- | mum use of the choke have been the goal. The most recent achieve- ! ment of this nature is said to virtually’ eliminate cold weather startIng annoyances as far as gasoline 1s concerned.

Mileage Improved

In the past, these advantages were not gained fully because of im- | proper use of the choke by hand or because automatic chokes had a tendency to treat all fuels alike. The result was that the mileage improvements possible with the newer winter gasolines were not attained in full measure. With the volatility selector, however, it is claimed possible now to adjust the carburetor system for the quality of fuel employed and thereby attain improvements in performance and economy | with the newest winter gasoline. | The use of hypoid and high tooth | pressure spiral bevel axles on many of the new models is proclaimed another step toward utilizing to the fullest extent the advantages of re- | cent petroleum industry developments. Attention is called to the fact that the hypoid pressure axle | requires careful attention to lubrication. The use of any old oil or grease spells certain trouble in these | units. They must be lubricated with products known to be suitable. Given this support, however, the resulting smoothness of operation and improved reliability will quickly become apparent, it is claimed.

CHEVROLET OFFERS TWO NEW SERIES OF SIX MODELS EACH

Pictured above is the first 1937 Chevrolet to be delivered in Indianapolis. It is a 1937 Club sedan, which was purchased by Harry Dawson, president of Kleiber-Dawson Co., 1400 E. 19th-st.

Cars Introduced to Public Throughout United States Today.

Chevrolet's new passenger cars for 1037, comprising two new series of six models each, were introduced today with public showings throughout the United States. The two series, known respectively as the

| Master and the Master De Luxe, | are .identical except for front spring

suspension, rear axle and steering ratios, and accessories and trim. On the Master De Luxe models, knee action, formerly optional as an extra, is not only continued as a

| major feature, but furnished at no | extra cost.

Master models are available with semi-elliptic front springs only. All models of both series have

| safety glass all around at no addi-

tional charge. Although the cars are described

| as new from bumper to bumper, the

change most obvious outwardly has A new treatdescribed as “diamond crown cpeedline styling,” represents a dis-

| tinct departure in design, and pro-

Gauces an impression of added fleetness and grace. The change, however, goes deeper than appearance,

| for the bodies are entirely new.

They introduce unisteel construc-

| tion, in which solid steel turret top, | steel side panels, steel double cowl, and steel floor are welded together | to form a permanently silent unit, { without bolt, nail,

rivet or screw. Even the doors are all of steel.

85 Horsepower Motor The bodies are mounted on a

| chassis which is also new, with the new

six-cylinder high-compression valve-in-head engine developing 85

| horsepower, new box girder chassis

frame combining rigidity and lightness, and hypoid rear axle drive

| gears, here used for the first time {in the low-priced field.

Chevrolet engineers emphasize the

| fact that the 1937 models adhere | closely | which Chevrolet

to engineering principles has developed through constant improvement year They are more compact,

duction in weight. Better hillclimbing and acceleration, with marked smoothness, durability and

| economy, characterize the perform{ance of the entire new line,

Both body and chassis refine-

| ments contribute to noteworthy ad- | vances in safety. comfort, driving | ease and general owner satisfac- | tion. | lowered over-all height, and with it,

The use of hypoid gears has

the center of gravity, a change which, in conjunction with widerrear springs, and larger cross-section tires on wider rims,

| makes for greater stability on the road.

The power plant and the body frame, the body being longer and wider, with the floor 2 1-16 inches lower than in 1936. The increase in width at the floor line in the front compartment is almost five inches, across the front at windshield level; 1': inches, and between the doors across the front seat, two inches.

| Wider windshield and larger win-

dows increase visibility and contribute much to safety.

Luggage Provision Ample

Ample’ provision for luggage is made in every model. Town sedan and sport sedan in each line have capacious trunks, and models with-

| out trunks or rear decks have com-

modious space behind the seat. Each also has a package ledge

well as a locking compartment in

{ the instrument panel.

The same power plant is used in both series. It is entirely new, and

| is introduced as the highest refine- | ment of the valve-in-head design, | for which Chevrolet has been known | over a long period of years. In it, | the bore is increased from 35-16 to { 3'2 inches, and the stroke reduced i from 4 to 33 inches, the displace-

ment being stepped up from 206.8 to

{2165 inches, and the compression | ratio raised from 6-to-1 to 6.25-to-1. | Increased power and torque

are available at all engine speeds, which give the Master De Luxe better performance’ and the Master greater fuel economy. The crankshaft of the new engine

has four bearings instead of three, | and an

innovation is the use of crankshaft bearings of graduated diameter, increasing from ‘front to

| rear, the front bearing being 2 11-16

inches in diameter, and the rear bearing being 2 25-32 inches. The 68-pound crankshaft is counterbal-

trol, are among the power plant's other new features. Driving ease is increased, and durability enhanced by the com-+ pletely new syncrosion in the new models. It is more compact and rigid, and the syncronizing mechanism is ' improved through the use of simplified cone clutches,

FORD DEALERS 60 TO DETROIT

New V-8 Displayed Before Representatives From All Parts of U. S.

More than 100 Ford dealers headed by R. A. Hayes, Indianapolis Ford branch manager and N. C. Sears, assistant manager, left Thursday for Detroit by special train, and 240 other Ford men by auto, where they will be the guests of Henry and Edsel Ford at the first general meeting of Ford dealers from the United States and Canada in the 33-year history of the company. The elaborate two-day program there includes the advance showing of the Ford V-8 for 1937. The first public presentation of the new car will be in dealers’ showrooms throughout the nation, Nov. 14. Detroit’s Coliseum was transformed into a huge theater for the presefitation of the new car before the largest gathering of automobile dealers in the history of the industry. Yesterday thousands of dealers from every state in the Union inspected the new features of the Ford V-8. This presentation was designed in spectacular manner in a colorful setting created by Walter Dorwin Teague, noted industrial designer. Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians provided music and entertainment prior to the car introduction. Brief talks were scheduled from Edsel Ford, W. C. Cowling, director of sales, and J. R. Davis.

Present Windmill

Friday afternoon the dealers saw Henry Ford's early American community, Greenfield Village, and there presented Mr. Ford with the oldest windmill in America. This historic mill, taken down from its original site at West Yarmouth, Mass., and re-erected in Greenfield village, was purchased with individual contributions of Ford dealers. On its new site it has been placed in running order as it was when built by the Pilgrims on Cape Cod in 1633. Returning to .the Coliseum Friday evening, the dealers were the guests of the Ford Motor Co. at a banquet. A mammoth floor show which broadcast of Waring’s Pennsylvanians and other outstanding entertainment features was presented. Today the Ford dealers were to inspect the Rouge plant of the Ford Motor Co., largest industrial establishment in the world, and the Linenln plant in Detroit. They are to leave late tonight for their homes.

ESTIMATES MILES TRAVELED It has been estimated by the American Petroleum Institute that travel by motor car, motor bus, and railroad in the United States in 1936 will reach a total of 236,000,000 passenger miles, or about hd miles per capita.

New Designs Are Oftered by Oldsmobile

Distinctive Characteristics Distinguish Six and Eight Models.

Oldsmobile’s two new and distinctly different cars for 1937 offer the new car purchaser a unique advantage never presented before, according to L. C. Burnett, Oldsmobile zone manager. “I believe that our engineers have completely mastered the problem long faced by manufacturers who produce more than one line of cars,” he said. “I refer to the general confusions in identity which often arise from the similarity in appearance of two or more lines in the same family of cars. “This year, our engineers undertook to solve this problem. The results they have achieved will beconie obvious to the public when the new cars are shown this month. Models Are Individval “There can be.no question as to which is the 1937 Oldsmobile Eight and which is the Oldsmobile Six. They possess distinct individualities that can not be confused with each other or, for that any other automobile.” The distinction, he said, has been achieved by different interpretations of styling, headlamps and tail lamps, exteriors and interiors. “Both the Six and the Eight are entirely new. Bigger in every way, with longer wheelbases, greater power and roomier bodies. Both offer many new safety features and provide the latest word in ease of operation supplemented by increased operating = economy,” he stated.

TRAILERS TOBE NEW FEATURE OF AUTO SHOW

Expect Industry to Emerge From ‘Novelty’ Class During 1937.

A new feature in vehicle displays is to be the section of automobile trailers at the Indianapolis Auto Show opening Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Manufacturers Building, State Fairground. While the trailer is just a “youngster” in the industry, it has

been estimated that more than

300,000 of these houses on wheels roamed the country in 1936. Manu-

facturers believe, however, that 1937 will take the trailer out- of the “novelty” class and definitely establish it as a standard item. The house trailer, or coach, is not exactly an innovation of 1936. However, it has been only recently that they have been developed into “land yachts.” Models to be viewed in the local show are equipped with kitchens, bath, running water, electricity for lighting, refrigeration, radios and even dishwashers. The convertible house cars provide sleeping accommodations for two to eight persons. .

More Space Reserved

Officials of the Auto Trade Association, sponsors of the annual motor exhibits, also announce more space has been reserved this year for commercial cars and trucks. Streamlining, color and designing have not been overlooked by the manufacturers whose primary interests heretofore have been utilitarian.

Streamlined Design Used by Goodrich for 1937 Models.

A new de luxe model boiler type hot water heater is announced by E. B. Oscars, manager Goodrich Silvertown Store, Delaware and North-sts, as the leader of its 193637 line of automobile heaters. Claimed by the Goodrich company as the “most beautiful heater” in America, the design of the new product has been streamlined throughout. Fully rounded ccrners protect stockings and shoes from being nicked or torn. The De Luxe is available in two finishes, a rich gray or tan satin finish to match the inside of the car. Built on the principle of hot water. heaters in homes, it has a heat trap providing full, steady heat even when driving at high speeds. A patented deflector throws heat in any direction or moves completely out of the way to provide a direct flow of warm air. An agle tube core, of long-life copper and brass construction floated on rubber cushions to prevent rattles and leaks, has 35 per cent more heating surface than straight tubes. Other features are a new illuminated control switch and a new quick-start-ing, high-speed motor. .
