Jack Benny Ousts Maj. Bowes From Peak Position in Radio Popularity; Comedian to Give Play’ Tomorrow “SATURDAY EVENING PROGRAMS
: (The Indianapolis Times is not responsible fer inaccuracies in program announcements caused by station changes after press. time.) INDLANARO LIS
Man Who Selected Unknown Soldier to Tell Story on WLW.
Jack Benny finally’ has ousted Maj. Bowes from top position in radio popularity. The latest audi ence survey, just completed, shows Jack several points above the Major. This is the first time in & year and a half that the Bowes’ hour has been out of first place. The Major's change of program time, from 7 o'clock Sunday eve= nings to the same hour on Thurse day, is thought to have accounted for some of the change in rating. Network officials consider the Sunday night hour as radio's best.
- At 6 o'clock tomorrow night, WLW, Jack will seek to add to his popularity by presenting an original version of “Girls’ Dormitory.” Mary Livingstone is to have the part played by Simone Simon in the motion picture, and “Prof.” Benny is to be the aloof but very romantic school teacher. » = ” Four identical and unidentie fied coffins resting in a ware destroyed chapel at Chalons-sure marne, France, confronted the sol« dier who had been detailed to choose America’s Unknown Soldier. Sergt. Edward Y oun ger, picked at random from a group of six men, walked back and forth before the caskets studying each one. Finally he placed a bouquet of pink and white roses
Sergt. Younger
1 on the second from the left, saluted,
and left the chapel. Sergt. Younger, who will describe his experience on tomorrow's We, the People broadcast (WLW at 4 p. m.) explains the reason for his choice: “A strange force seemed to stop me each time I passed that coffin. As long as I live I will feel that I know the man who sleeps in

MIND
IT'S a temptation to joke about + this, but it is truly one of the deepest facts of all human social intercourse for both men and women. As I quoted Peter .Joray the other day, for a woman to show interest in what 3 man is saying is the way to interest him and it applies equally to men who wish to interest and charm women. It is the fundamental law for getting along well and happily—indeed charmingly—with other people.

drama, which illustrates the part slums have in creating child criminals, during the 1936 Mobilization for Human Needs broadcast over WIRE and WFBM at 6 o’clock tomorrow night. This brpadcast, the second in a series of four designed to attract public attention to charity drives in more than 350 communities, is under direction of Gerard Swope, Mobilization chairman. ” 2 2 Probably no one else finds life as amusing as does Col. Stoopnagle, Nothing seems to bother him. The other day a call came from his sponsor. “I'm sorry, but he is very busy, the Colonel's wife told the big bess. “But it is’ very: important that I talk to him.” “= = : So Stoop left his engaging business of watching a man dig a hole in the street. and answered the phone. He had left the “busy” notice so he would not be intere rupted until he found out what the hole was for. ( Budd, the Colonel's partner dure ing their 4:30 o'clock Sunday after noon broadcasts over WIRE, also likes to cut up. His 5-year-old daughter was a visitor at a recent broadcast. In the. middle of the show she turned to her mother and asked, “Why do you let Daddy be so silly?” 8 8 o Because Ferde - Grofe, maestro “on the Saturday Night Party (WLW at 7 o'clock), likes to play jazz, he once lost a job with the pos Angeles Philharmonic orches= ra. One night—it was back in 1920 —Dr. Walter Rothwell, the orches= tra’s conductor, strolled into ene of Los Angeles’ leading night spots to see his featured viola player up on the dance orchestra stand glee~ fully pounding jazz on the piano, Shortly after this, Mr. Grofe re~ signed from the symphonic group. Tonight's Party will feature an« other melodrama presented by a cast chosen from the audience, The only requirement is that “ac< tors” be able to read one syllable words. Walter O'Keefe is the casts ing director, 8 2 ” A “Bertha, the Sewing Machine Girl,” perhaps the best remembered of all old-time melodramas, is to be revived for WGN’s Wontler Show at 8 p. m: tomorrow. Originally produced early in this century, the drama tells the story of how Bertha slaved in a sweat shop to support her blind sister while the booted and be-mustached villain used foul means to get rid of her so he could claim a fortune she was to get. However, as in all melodramas of the time, the hero appears in‘the nick of time, rescucs Bertha from a burning building and thwarts the villain's scheme. (Lis=
