BY JAMES

THRASHER

Once in a while there comes, to the persistent concert goer, an occasion when a secret door is opened and a new vista in the realm of art is revealed. ‘And there are few experiences more satisfying and thrilling. Such an experience must have come to many in the throng which packed English’s to capacity last night for the

opening number of the Martens series, the performance of’

the Jooss European Ballet. Here was something of an unknown. quantity; a company known vaguely for “The | Green Table” and for success

in Europe and along the At-|

lantic seaboard. But the repeated | and insistent applause which greet- | ed the dancers after the closing bal- | let, and punctuated the close of each scene was unmistakeable proof | of the audience's approval, The question of concerted dancing as a true art form always has | been a debatable one. This writer,

at any rate, has left previous ballet |

performances with a feeling of* frustration and disappointment. With the present company, however, all |

istence; the aftermath, and last. the | Gentlemen ih Black, in a recapitulation of the first scene.

Scenes Unforgettable

It is impossible to gather or report this ballet’s fullest significance from one seeing. But such scenes as that of the refugees, and the | aftermath of war, are unforgettable. Many have quarreled at Mr, | Jooss’ electic use of classic and modern dance techniques, and | probably will continue to do so. The point is, however, that he has { synthetized movement, pattern, | color and music into an art form somewhat as Wagner dredmeéd of

“May Robson seems to be having a little disciplinary troubles with

the younger generation, as represented by Guy Kibbee ‘and Sibyl

Jason.

of scenery, likewise is an inseparable part of the ensemble. Last night's audience saw four ballets: “Ballade,” danced to variations of an old French folk-song by John Colman; “The Big City,” to Alexander Tansman's music; “A Ball in Old Vienna,” with music by Joseph Lanner, arranged by Mr. Cohen, and “The Green Table,” undoubtedly Mr. Jooss’ masterpiece, with music by Mr. Cohen. Of the first ballet the program stated: “The Queen sent g poisoned bouquet to the young Marquise, who has been favored by the King's attention.” The dancers, who might have stepped out of a medieval tapestry, told their story with moving reticence.

Dance Clear as Etching

The sharply contrasting “Big City” showed a girl, her sweetheart, a2 young workman, and the libertine, who lured her to the dance hall and disillusionment. A ballet with ‘all the bite and conciseness of an etching, it was danced impressively. Gay, colorful and thoroughly de-

lightful was the third item, and a.

perfect foil for what. was to follow. “The Green Table” called the most eloquent peace propaganda yet launched. It also dispels any -notion that the dance can not reach the depth and sinscerity of great art. There are eight scenes: The grotesquely satirical conference of the Gentlemen in Black around the Green Table—the breeders of war; the soldiers’ farewells, with Death standing by, in military garb; the skirmishes; the

refugee women, who advance slowly | toward Death, and the Old Mother,

who finds deliverance in his arms: the death of the woman spy; brothel, where Death rescues a young girl from her miserable ex-
