LAND PROJECT

“Army of Workmen Strives to Reach Halfway Mark Before Cold Weather.

~ An army of workmen competed with advancing cold weather today in an effort to reach the half-way mark of\a 50,000-acre land devel-

opment project in Brown and Martin Counties. The work is part of a land-use program directed: by the Resettlement Administration, which has nine projects involving 116,000 acres under way in Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. Approximately 3200 men are nonagricultural land available for uses more economic than farming. The Brown and Martin Counties projects are sponsored by the Indiana Department of Conservation. The Brown County area includes about 20,000 acres in the neighborhood of Nashville while the Martin County project coyers some 30,000 acres north of Shoals.

Many Acres Ruined

“In the past, thousands of acres of land in these areas have been ruined by improper farming methods,, or never should have been farmed in the first place,” said. Sawyer said savings in governmental expense through abandonment of unnecessary schools and roads in the project areas would assist grealty in reducing the cost of local government. All but 15,000 acres of the needed land is under option and has been accepted by the Federal government. Of the total amount, more than 25,000 acres already have been purchased from the owners. Sawyer said selling of this land to the government is entirely voluntary on the part of the owner.

CCC WORKER DREAMS, THEN KILLS FATHER

Yesterday morning, while his father, George, 50, slept, he plunged a knife into his throat. He had’ crossed the continent to perform the deed.
