on Stock Prices, Flynn Says.

BY JOHN T. FLYNN

YORK, Oct. 22.—-One begins to hear again the old ment on how many times its ings -a stock should be priced. we forgotten the furor =resgl by the interview given by Mr. pb on the eve of sailing abroad ne in 1927 or 1928 to the that stock generally ought to considered as worth 15 times the : sarnings of ho company share? Stocks have been going up and, as usual the discussion revives at intervals as to whether they are too high or too low. And into this discussion comes the Mr. F1 old theory about’ yn the ratio be-

fen earnings and price.

One commentator makes a study 50 leading #btive stocks and nts out an interesting fact. In when things were quite d and earnings low or nonexis and the future dark, these s "sold for 22 times their earnings. In "1835 they sold for 21 times their earnings. Now, when things are ter and the future seemingly rosier, the same stocks sell for only 47 times their earnings.

» n » HE point made is that, though shares have risen in price ‘they have not risen proportionately "10 their earnings. And while they Lare higher now than two years ago "By a great deal, they are still too

dow because they ought to be selldng at a higher ratio to their earn-

“Por the benefit of the unwily intwestor, this, then, is a good time to call attention to the fact that this ‘theory of ratio to earnings is a pretty dangerous one and is based “Son no sound reasons whatever. If "Mr. Raskob bought stocks at 15 times their earnings in 1927 or 198 ‘he has learned since how sad a ‘blunder that was. © A moment's reflection will reveal ‘that while stock prices should bear A reasonable relation to the earn-' Ings of a corporation, the comparison should be made not with the current earnings but with earnings Over a period of years.

F course I speak now of the investor. He is interested first, in a reasonable yield and in & reasonable outlook for the imement in the intrinsic value of investment. As to yield he looks not for a good yield this year, but for a found yield year in and year out. AS to increment, he can look for NO persistent increment if the future intrinsic value of the stock 48 already discounted by too high market price. ‘Of course there is no space here discuss this intricate subject. I gly call attention to the folly permitting market enthusiasts, jarket shprks, financial prophets id tipsters to involve ycu in the erilous and perhaps disastrous iniment of your money upon any theory as* this * earningsfice ratio theory. ~ Copyright. 1936, . Bradstreet reported today. However, much of this rise will not be passed on to the general public until the spring of 1937, the ree port said. “Due to the drought, food hoard ing spread greatly during August and. September and gave some retailers the largest volume of sales

recorded for these months in several years,” the report read.
